About The Position

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is recruiting a Geotechnical Engineering Specialist in Helena. This position serves as an entry to mid-level geotechnical specialist and conducts basic to intermediate geotechnical engineering analysis and design and performs field investigations. The position, with assistance and guidance (dependent upon experience) from a Geotechnical District Manager or other senior geotechnical section staff, evaluates project plans; establishes guidelines, procedures, and parameters for various projects and activities; plans and oversees a variety of investigation, sampling, and engineering projects; provides technical assistance to a variety of individuals and agencies involved with ongoing road construction projects; and performs a variety of other duties in support of the Department goals and Division objectives. The duties are performed in both the office and field. This position is part of a career ladder with career advancement opportunities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geology, or another closely related field.
  • Level 1: No prior work experience required for entry level.
  • Level 2: 6 months to 2 years of related work experience required.
  • Level 3: 2 to 4 years of related work experience required.
  • Education credentials to eventually apply for licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Professional Geologist (PG).

Nice To Haves

  • Basic knowledge of geotechnical engineering and geology.
  • Knowledge of construction methods, processes, and procedures.
  • Familiarity with computer-assisted design software and engineering techniques.
  • Introductory knowledge of generally accepted geotechnical guidelines and procedures regarding road design and construction.

Responsibilities
