About The Position

The AECOM Water Business Unit is seeking a motivated Civil Engineer II specializing in Geotechnical Engineering to join our growing team in the Germantown, MD office. This role is ideal for an early‑career engineer ready to take on more independent tasks, provide technical guidance to junior staff, and contribute to diverse geotechnical and infrastructure projects. Responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, the following: Perform geotechnical analyses and calculations with moderate supervision, including settlement analyses, slope stability, seepage modeling, bearing capacity evaluations, deep foundation pile capacity analyses, retaining wall analyses, seismic/liquefaction analyses, and ground improvement assessments. Correlate and interpret engineering and subsurface data using established procedures. Review geotechnical laboratory tests and field investigation data. Field Work & Investigations Support and oversee subsurface investigation programs including drilling, test pits, CPTs, and in‑situ testing. Conduct construction observation and documentation. Project Execution & Collaboration Provide guidance to Civil I engineers and interns. Identify discrepancies in results and propose solutions to atypical problems. Coordinate with multidisciplinary team members. Assists task manager/Project manager in coordination and management duties Perform tasks according to established budgets, timelines, and standards Technical Reporting & Communication Prepare portions of engineering reports and calculations. Communicate project updates and participate in client or internal meetings. Perform self‑checks and support quality reviews of deliverables. Innovation & Continuous Improvement Provide feedback on procedures and contribute improvement ideas. Explore use of data analytics and digital tools in geotechnical workflows.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering plus 2 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and education.
  • EIT certification.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, gINT/AGS, GeoStudio, PLAXIS, MathCAD, or similar.
  • Valid US Driver’s License required to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices. As a condition of employment, selected candidate must pass a Motor Vehicle Records review.

Nice To Haves

  • MS in Geotechnical Engineering strongly preferred.
  • 4 years of relevant experience is preferred
  • PE license or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
  • Experience in regional geology.
  • Experience with soil mechanics and foundation engineering.
  • Experience preparing technical reports.
  • Ability to work outdoors and lift 50 lbs.
