About The Position

This position is responsible for planning and directing the geotechnical activities of the district as they relate to the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of roadways and structures on both state and local systems.

Requirements

  • Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
  • Five years of experience in civil engineering.
  • Ability to traverse a variety of terrain including, but not limited to, slopes, ladders, steps, rocks and mud as well as outdoor work in a variety of environments including but not limited to drilling sites, active construction sites and roadways open to traffic.
  • Valid driver's license
  • Districtwide travel with overnight stays.
  • Overtime.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position.
  • This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of geotechnical products, subsurface investigation methods, and soil testing procedures.
  • Previous coursework in geotechnical engineering.
  • Previous work experience in geotechnical engineering.
  • Strong oral and/or written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and supervise the activities of the district Geotechnical Unit.
  • Provide timely, practical, and economical solutions to geotechnical problems encountered during the design, construction, and maintenance of roadways and structures.
  • Prepare, review, and approve Geotechnical Reports for structure and roadway improvements.
  • Review plans, and develop specifications, special provisions, and details regarding geotechnical construction.
  • Develop the scope of work and supervise professional contracts awarded to consulting firms forgeotechnical work.
  • Provide geotechnical expertise to local highway agencies and other government agencies.
  • Ensure that geotechnical construction is performed according to applicable plans, special provisions, and standard specifications.
  • Assign, train, motivate, and evaluate staff. Ensure staff compliance with applicable safety regulations, practices, and procedures.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
