The candidate shall support the GHSC with tasks related to planning, configuring, and implementing complex data acquisition and management systems. The candidate shall participate in the design, monitoring, maintenance, and upgrade of web services, applications, and interfaces and software systems to meet the needs of the Geomagnetism Program as well as documentation of these systems. The Geomagnetism Program has an ongoing need for software development related to the operation and maintenance of Geomagnetism Program data acquisition, electronics, and communications equipment in use at 14 USGS magnetic observatories and at partner locations operated in cooperation with the USGS. The GHSC is also improving the computing infrastructure that supports the completeness, reliability, and timeliness of geomagnetic observatory data available from the Geomagnetism Program. The program is an integrated effort which provides real-time geomagnetic data to customers at the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), U.S. Air Force, NASA, and other agencies for operational monitoring of space-weather conditions, to a variety of international partners through the INTERMAGNET consortium, and to the public through the Geomagnetism Program website. The contractor must have experience with the Java programming language (not JavaScript) , Linux/Unix operating systems and shell scripting. Experience with Git and GitLab or other collaborative software revision control and configuration management software is also crucial. Familiarity with Linux system administration basics, and container and cloud programming is preferred.
