About The Position

GAI is seeking a Geology Manager (Division Manager) to lead the firm’s Environmental Assessment and Hydrogeology Division, which resides within the Power Generation Business Sector of GAI’s Energy Business Unit. This position is responsible for developing new business, maintaining existing client bases, and overseeing the technical and financial performance of the Environmental Assessment and Hydrogeology Division.

Requirements

  • 13 to 20+ years of total Geology/Hydrogeology experience, with at least 5 of those years developing clients and managing staff, preferably with an engineering consulting organization or similar professional services firm.
  • Demonstrated track record of external customer engagements and building and maintaining successful client relationships, preferably in various sectors.
  • Proven experience in facility compliance and regulations, with knowledge of monitoring systems
  • Groundwater flow/fate and transport modeling using numerical modeling.
  • Experience with successful site remediation (soil and groundwater) system selection, design, and implementation, preferably for petroleum release response
  • Driver’s License
  • Relevant professional license or certification in applicable technical discipline is required (PE, PG, etc.)
  • B.S. Geology or other technical degree, master’s degree or Equivalent Experience Preferred

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred experience in storage tank compliance and regulations, with knowledge of storage tank systems and monitoring systems (Veeder-Root systems and electronics diagnostics).
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Actively pursues work from new and existing clients by building and maintaining customer relationships, monitoring future work opportunities, communicating regularly, attending client events, developing proposals, and directly negotiating with clients. Meets annual sales goal for Division. Supports other internal GAI Business Sectors such as Transportation, Oil and Gas, Transmission Line Siting/Engineering, Water, Aviation, and Community Development to propose and deliver Environmental Assessment and Hydrogeology services for their projects.
  • Works with Business Sector Leader to develop annual productivity and profitability goals for Division including staffing, utilization, project profitability, and overhead budgets.
  • Monitors Division performance monthly versus goals and reports status to Business Sector Leader as directed. Develop corrective action plans as needed.
  • Supervises on the order of 12 directly-reporting staff of group managers, technical personnel, and/or project managers. Responsible for hiring, development, career path management, performance reviews, and staff actions for all employees within the Division.

  • Leads designs on complete projects within discipline, systems, components, or processes; leads preparations on project documents; plans field investigations, analyzes and interprets data; formulates and solves advanced problems.
  • The candidate is expected to have proven experience in the application of environmental regulations as they apply to Contaminant Hydrogeology, corrective action, Coal Combustion site hydrogeology and voluntary site remediation. The successful candidate with his staff will support overseeing and completion of compliance operations, site investigations, environmental due diligence assessments, overseeing environmental sampling and monitoring, site remediation, and regulatory compliance evaluations and reporting. The candidate’s role would include developing client and business relationships and providing staff management and geology/hydrogeology expertise across a diverse range of multi-discipline design and construction projects
  • Perform Phase I/II Environmental Site Assessments (ESA), Site Characterizations, and Remedial Investigations in accordance with the most recent ASTM standards and states’ voluntary remediation program.
  • Plan and conduct environmental media investigations and sampling activities (soil, groundwater, surface water, etc.), oversight of soil and bedrock drilling and sampling including monitoring well design, installation and groundwater sampling, complete waste classification and clean fill determinations, waste disposal.
  • Interpretation of groundwater elevation data, soil and groundwater quality data, and design and conducting aquifer tests (slug tests and pump tests) with associated data processing and interpretation.
  • Plan and oversee soil vapor and indoor air investigations including data evaluation and modeling.
  • Prepare Remedial Action Plans, Remedial Action Progress Reports and Remedial Action Completion Reports in accordance with the Corrective Action
  • Independent production of multi-media Sampling Plans/Quality Assurance Plans, Health and Safety Plans, Site Characterization Reports, Remedial Investigation Reports, and Final Reports in accordance with state voluntary remediation and brownfield
  • Manage field investigations (e.g., monitoring and sampling) and remediation activities. Domestic travel may be required.
  • Review and develop technical specifications for written proposals to clients and serve as project team leader and participate in meetings and communications with clients pertaining to specific projects/tasks.
  • Directly manages on the order of $1 million of total revenue annually as needed with no limit to the number or value of individual projects managed. Plans and manages projects of high value with medium to high-risk profiles.
  • Delivers scope, schedule, budget, quality, safety, and profitability of all projects managed.
  • Demonstrates expertise in the development of project schedules, cost budgets and understanding and analysis of the financial data.
  • Works closely with Project Accounting Staff to monitor and control project cost and billings to meet budget profit, to analyze project performance data weekly, and to develop recovery plans as needed.
  • Review and approve work plans to investigate the type and distribution of contaminants in the subsurface.
  • Perform environmental geology work and assist with conducting investigations, inspections, and environmental studies and surveys to gain further information on a particular environmental problem or issue, verify site characteristics, and/or to plan for future environmental needs.
  • Reviews and approves analysis of data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations for the interpretation or presentation of data, findings, or analyses.
  • Reviews and approves technical reports that present interpretations of the data collected and provide recommendations.
  • May manage projects, up to $250,000 in yearly value, without additional approval, but is a small component of overall work.
  • Develops practice strategy for staff development through mentored experience, continuing education, and self-development.
  • Negotiates critical and controversial issues with leadership.
  • Represents their practice at important functions or conferences.
