About The Position

The Geologist 5 - Mineral Resources Section Chief position at the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys (DGGS) is a leadership role focused on managing and overseeing the Mineral Resources group. This position involves providing administrative, supervisory, and technical leadership, as well as scientific oversight of projects related to economic geology, petrology, ore deposit models, and geophysics. The role is critical for promoting economic development and sound management of Alaska's mineral resources, contributing to the state's geological database, and representing the agency as a subject matter expert.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering.
  • Four years of advanced professional experience in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering.
  • Two years of professional project managerial experience in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering, if holding a Geologist 4 position.
  • A master's degree from an accredited college in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering, with two years of advanced professional experience.
  • A doctorate degree from an accredited college in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geological engineering, engineering geology, or any of their subdivisions, including mining engineering, with one year of advanced professional experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of planning, coordination, and execution of business functions, resource allocation, and production.
  • Experience in geospatial science and geographic-based data analysis.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Develop long-term and short-term conceptual plans, goals, objectives, budgets, timelines, and milestones for the section.
  • Manage section staff, finances, and technical resources.
  • Develop and oversee all section programs, including schedules, budgets, and deliverables.
  • Provide advanced professional competency and leadership in directing and/or performing as a team member in office and field studies to meet section objectives.
  • Respond to section needs and requests from division management, other divisions or agencies, educational institutions, and stakeholders.
  • Author and/or oversee the research, content development, and publication of the annual Alaska Mineral Industry report.
