About The Position

Incumbent is responsible for reviewing wellhead protection plans submitted for review for completeness and accuracy according to Indiana's Wellhead Protection Rule 327 IAC 8-4.1, supports the efforts of source water protection accomplishted by: 1) Reviews submitted documents for accruacy and adequacy. 2) Determines adequacy of wellhead area delineations using best professional judgment and applying geologic and hydrogeologic principles. 3) Communicates results/determinations of plan reviews to Public Water Supply System owners and operators. 4) Provides clear and accurate summaries of plan deficiencies as determined by comparison with rule requirements and geologic principles. Incumbent shall contribute to the goals of the Section with particular emphasis on the goals of the Environmental Performance Partnership Agreement (EnPPA) with EPA. The essential functions of this role are as follows: Provide geologic consultation utilizing technical expertise regarding engineering geology, hydrogeology, and geology. Understand, interpret, and employ applicable State and Federal regulatory rules, guidance, and policies related to geological investigations and contaminant remediation. Lead or assist field teams during site investigations. Evaluate and assist in developing geologically related plans and documents. Develop and write technical reports and correspondence including tabulating and interpreting data for reports. Follow proper sampling procedures and use appropriate geophysical and other field techniques. Review and evaluate technical guidance documents, reports, journals, and related articles. Determine historic geologic and hydrogeologic conditions utilizing agency files. Assist in geological enforcement actions. Provide technical assistance to other staff, state and federal agencies, industries, contractors, and the public. This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

Requirements

Bachelor's or advanced degree in Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry, Geological Engineer, or Geotechnical Engineering from an accredited college or university.
Extensive knowledge of the principles, practices, theories, and methodologies applied to geologic/hydrogeologic science and related fields.
Thorough knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply all applicable federal and state laws, environmental regulations, acts, and guidelines.
Extensive knowledge of applied statistics, environmental design, geologic sampling, and interpretation of geologic analysis.
Thorough knowledge of remedial and corrective action as it relates to various program areas.
Ability to conduct intensive research for geologic and hydrogeological advancement of the program area.
Ability to determine resolutions and new approaches to various geotechnical problems.
Specialized knowledge of geophysical instrumentation including Electro magnetometer, Resistivity Meter, and Seismograph.
Specialized knowledge of well hydraulics, ground water modeling, drinking water management, waste and wastewater management, and related regulations.
Valid IN driver's license

Nice To Haves

Licensed Professional Geologist in Indiana preferred.
Related certifications and coursework may be considered for education or experience.

Responsibilities

Interprets and evaluates the adequacy of submitted hydrogeologic modeling delineations
Manages ground water database supporting the Statewide Ground Water Monitoring Network
Supports the field sampling efforts of the Statewide Ground Water Monitoring Network (State of Indiana Driver's License is required)
Reviews and evaluates technical guidance documents, reports, journals and related articles
Investigates ground water complaints, responds to public and/or interested parties
Reviews departmental files for assessing and reporting
Provides technical assistance to staff, state and federal agencies, industries, contractors, environmental engineering consultants and the public
Initiates documents and assists in administration of enforcement
Recommends and issues letters of deficiency related to hydrogeologic modeling delineations and review of Wellhead Protection Plan documents
Attends related training, conferences and seminars
Performs related duties as assigned
