The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Consultant at WSP will play a crucial role in supporting environmental consulting projects by utilizing GIS analytical skills to map floodplains and prepare figures and maps for hazard mitigation and emergency management activities. The consultant will collaborate with project teams to develop products from various geospatial sources, contributing to the company's mission of sustainable development and climate resiliency.

  • Perform geographic and non-geographic data manipulation, management, and analysis.
  • Use GIS software to map flood risk within flood-prone communities.
  • Revise existing GIS layers and create new layers following established standards and procedures.
  • Correct geospatial location of features based on aerial photography or topography.
  • Create high-quality maps, GIS analysis, and data for reports to support various Engineering and Environmental projects.
  • Maintain metadata and best practices to support systems and data.
  • Follow prescribed procedures to develop flood risk products in accordance with FEMA floodplain mapping best practices.
  • Review mapping submittals in accordance with FEMA floodplain mapping and quality review standards.
  • Maintain or modify existing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) databases and proficiency with geodatabase design.
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, communities, subcontractors, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
  • Assist with business development and proposal writing.
  • Remain current in latest GIS practices, methods, procedures, subject matter, and techniques.
  • BS degree in GIS, Geography, Environmental Science, or Computer Science.
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience.
  • Significant experience with ESRI's ArcGIS platform.
  • Strong analytical skills and prior demonstrated experience with research techniques, modeling data, scanning and digitizing files, and experience maintaining records and databases for assigned projects.
  • Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members, with strict adherence to QA/QC.
  • Basic proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, assorted field applicable technologies, web mapping applications and tools.
  • General awareness of AutoCAD, Python, Visual Basic, Arcade, or SQL programming.
  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Experience with FEMA RiskMAP program.
  • Direct experience using ArcGIS Desktop, ArcGIS Pro, or ArcGIS Online.
  • Experience with presenting GIS findings/results in a collaborative environment.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Project, and OneDrive.
  • Experience with Python, C#, or other programming languages.
