The Geographic Information System Technician position is a highly technical role within the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, specifically focused on administering and coordinating the Florida Forest Service's GIS programs. The technician will be responsible for managing geodatabases, conducting field investigations, and providing GIS training and support to various forestry staff. This role plays a crucial part in enhancing the efficiency of forest management through effective data collection, analysis, and mapping.

  • Administer and coordinate the Florida Forest Service's Geographic Information System (GIS) programs.
  • Conduct field investigations and document activities as required.
  • Develop and maintain Geo databases tracking various environmental and forestry metrics.
  • Create and maintain GIS geodatabases for State Forests using collected data.
  • Convert and reformat data for entry into the ArcGIS database.
  • Collect data in the field using GPS and other technologies.
  • Create and update maps for field operations and state forest brochures.
  • Assist in the distribution of GIS data and tools to enhance program efficiency.
  • Provide GIS training and technical support to Florida Forest Service personnel.
  • Research GIS needs of forestry staff and provide necessary support.
  • Collaborate with other agencies regarding GIS mapping and data management.
  • Assist with state forest activities such as prescribed burning and timber inventory.
  • Provide wildfire and emergency response support as directed.
  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Three (3) years of professional experience in systems analysis, management analysis, program planning, or related fields.
  • A master's degree can substitute for one (1) year of required experience.
  • Possession of a valid driver license.
  • Experience with ESRI ArcGIS software (ArcGIS Desktop).
  • Skilled in data entry and operation of GIS equipment.
