Expedia Group’s Destination Team is an experienced group of GIS and geographic data experts dedicated to building, maintaining, and enhancing the global spatial data foundation that powers our destination experiences worldwide. As a Geographer II, you will join a collaborative team in Seattle or Austin, leading complex projects that evolve our curated database of administrative and tourism regions. You’ll work alongside product, engineering, and machine learning partners to deliver scalable, AI-driven geospatial solutions that drive strategic business outcomes. We’re seeking an innovative individual contributor with advanced geospatial expertise and a strong background in AI or large language models. You’ll own the curation and optimization of Expedia Group’s global geography data and regional hierarchies—balancing traveler needs, business goals, and geopolitical realities to support exceptional travel experiences for millions.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Geography, GIS, Geospatial Science, Urban Planning, Environmental Science, or a related field
• 3+ years of hands-on experience in geographic data analysis and GIS, including building and managing complex spatial hierarchies and workflows
• Proven application of AI/ML and LLMs in geospatial data analysis, automation, and process optimization
• Proficient with GIS platforms, spatial databases (e.g., SQL), and scripting languages (such as Python or R) for data analysis
• Strong understanding of geospatial data structures, taxonomies, and hierarchical models, with ability to resolve conflicts among geopolitical, business, and stakeholder needs
• Excellent communication, business acumen, and collaboration skills, including experience delivering scalable solutions and clearly presenting insights to technical and non-technical audiences

Responsibilities

• Lead Advanced GIS & AI-Driven Projects such as new frameworks and hierarchy redesign.
• Leverage AI and LLMs to automate analysis, deliver insights, and accelerate outcomes.
• Use AI-powered methods for integration to curate and enhance Expedia Group’s global geo data library, validating and enriching to optimize for travel and tourism applications.
• Design Spatial Models & Visualizations that integrate AI-driven analytics, to uncover patterns, relationships, and actionable insights.
• Automate and optimize geospatial workflows using advanced querying, scripting, and AI/ML to increase efficiency, and scale geographic solutions.
• Collaborate and consult across disciplines to translate business needs into innovative geospatial solutions; consult on geopolitical, stakeholder, and evolving data requirements.
• Champion innovation by promoting continuous learning, mentoring, and participating in communities of practice.
