About The Position

Fermilab’s Particle Physics Division (PPD) is seeking a full-time Geodesist II to join the team. Under general supervision, provides routine technical support for an assigned area, typically an experimental or support group. Additionally, leads project activities for precise three-dimensional alignment and metrology assignments for particle accelerators, beam lines, detectors, specialty equipment, and infrastructure projects from large to small scope and physical dimension. What your day-to-day as a Geodesist II will look like: May lead project activities and/or performs tasks using precise three-dimensional alignment and metrological techniques for accelerators, beam lines, detectors, specialty equipment, and infrastructure projects spanning small to very large areas. Evaluate proposals for experimental and accelerator projects to determine the geodetic and alignment requirements. Evaluate technological advances in the applications of geodesy, alignment, and mapping of beam components such as GPS, laser tracking interferometry, and VSTARS for higher accuracy requirements. Analyze potential resource requirements and acts as liaison for all communication and work requests between existing beam lines, experiments, and the assigned metrology group. Develop high accuracy medium and large-scale geodetic networks to meet the positioning criteria of experiments. Assign activities to alignment crews including measurement requirements, data input, quality control, and safety considerations. Negotiates scheduling between the projects or experiments and the direct supervisor of assigned personnel. Develop and improves computer software programs required for data acquisition, quality control analyses, and data validation for database and archival requirements. Prepare technical correspondence and reports, authors or co-authors scientific papers for publication or presentations at technical meetings, conferences, and workshops. Recommend changes in procedures, methodology and instrumentation to improve the effectiveness and quality of the results. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor. Abide by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
