About The Position

The Genotyping Systems Innovation Co-Op role at Bayer involves evaluating and developing methodologies for sequencing to characterize the genomes of plants. The position focuses on enhancing existing workflows, particularly through automation, to improve efficiency and accuracy in laboratory settings. Responsibilities include assessing automated laboratory scheduling software, handling the installation and integration of automated devices, and contributing to innovations that reduce costs and improve efficiency. The co-op will also drive experimental design with guidance from senior scientists, execute experiments on next generation sequencing workflows, and collaborate with computational scientists for data analysis. At the end of the co-op, the incumbent will present an assessment of workflows to the Precision Genomics team.

Requirements

  • Must be registered and currently enrolled in a PhD program pursuing a degree in Engineering, Biology, Cell & Molecular Biology, Genetics, or related field
  • Demonstrated interest and coursework in subjects related to genetics and/or molecular biology
  • Curiosity and self-motivation to be exposed to and learn different molecular biology techniques and their applications
  • Ability to develop protocols to navigate troubleshooting issues
  • Ability to work within a team-based environment of other scientists
  • Agility in the face of changing projects or demands
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with techniques such as DNA and RNA extraction, PCR, dPCR, next generation sequencing, and bioinformatic analysis of sequencing data
  • Experience with Laboratory automation software and familiarity with liquid handling platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and develop methodologies relating to sequencing for genomic characterization of plants
  • Assess and enhance existing workflows with a focus on automation to improve efficiency and accuracy
  • Evaluate automated laboratory scheduling software to orchestrate next generation sequencing workflows
  • Handle installation and integration of automated devices while ensuring laboratory stability
  • Contribute directly to the development of innovations that improve efficiency and reduce unit cost
  • Drive experimental design with guidance from senior scientists
  • Primary or shared project responsibility for executing experiments on next generation sequencing workflows with assistance from scientists in the Genotyping Systems Innovation team
  • Understand and discuss sequencing and genomic data; collaborate with computational scientists as needed for analysis
  • Provide assessment of workflows and make a presentation to the greater Precision Genomics team at the end of the Co-op.
