About The Position

Driscoll Children’s Hospital is seeking a board-certified or board-eligible Genetic Counselor (CGC) to join our Genetics Team. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a collaborative, mission-driven environment serving the children of South Texas. This role supports physicians in evaluating, diagnosing, and managing children with known or suspected genetic conditions. The counselor serves as an educator, advocate, and resource for patients, families, and the healthcare team.

Requirements

  • Master's degree (M. A.) in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program.
  • Board Certified or board eligible through the American Board of Genetic Counseling. Board certification must be obtained within 2 years of hire and continuously maintained.
  • Ensure eligibility to obtain any future state licensing or licensure requirements and continuously maintain.
  • Must have a valid unrestricted Texas Drivers license.
  • Excellent interpersonal, counseling, and written and verbal communication skills for a diverse patient population and clinical audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Clinical experience in a healthcare setting preferred.
  • Research or teaching experience preferred
  • Knowledge of medical genetics, genomics, and genetic testing methodologies preferred.
  • Participate in clinical research projects at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

Responsibilities

  • Provide genetic counseling to pediatric patients and their families regarding diagnosis, prognosis, management, and genetic risk.
  • Review medical and family histories to assess the likelihood of genetic conditions.
  • Explain complex genetic concepts in an understandable and compassionate way.
  • Facilitate and coordinate appropriate genetic testing, including informed consent and interpretation of results.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other specialists in multidisciplinary clinics
  • Offer emotional support and connect families to community resources and support services.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in the medical record and ensure compliance with hospital and regulatory standards.
  • Participate in educational activities for residents, medical students, and staff.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Effectively administers performance management system including: developmental feedback goal setting assesses competency progressive discipline
  • Strong knowledge of and effective in administering hospital policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for sound management of human resources.
  • Makes and implements decisions compatible with organizational goals.
  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines.
  • Maintains composure, effectiveness, and flexibility under pressure.
