About The Position

The Genetic Counselor will assess individual or family risk for inherited conditions, provide information to healthcare providers and families, and support informed decision-making regarding genetic disorders and birth defects. The role involves conducting research related to genetic conditions and counseling, while working closely with patients to understand their medical histories and emotional needs.

Requirements

  • Masters' degree from an ABGC accredited university required.
  • 2 years of fertility experience required.
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible.
  • Detail-oriented with pristine organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong work ethic and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and excellent time-management skills.
  • Strong customer service and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to maintain composure in a fast-paced environment while providing compassionate patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and interpret test results and genetic information from family histories to identify at-risk patients or families.
  • Advise patients or relatives on the risks, consequences, and nature of inherited disorders and diseases, including management and family planning options.
  • Conduct risk assessments and recommend medical or genetic testing based on analysis.
  • Work with couples to understand risks of passing on genetic disorders to their unborn children.
  • Thoroughly record and evaluate the medical history of each patient, gaining an in-depth understanding of their family history.
  • Determine or coordinate treatment plans by requesting laboratory services and reviewing relevant literature.
  • Explain diagnostic procedures such as ultrasound and amniocentesis to patients.
  • Assess patients' psychological or emotional needs and make referral recommendations as necessary.
  • Support and counsel patients regarding risks for genetic diseases or disorders, helping them manage difficult findings.
  • Understand PGT-M/PGT-A implications and provide support during extensive genetic testing.
