Genetic Counselor - Physician's Office - Cancer Institute at St. Francis Medical Center Primary Function/General Purpose of Position The Genetics Counselor is responsible for providing genetic counseling to patients, parents and families.

Requirements

  • Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC), American Board of Genetic Counseling (required)
  • Master's degree in Genetic Counseling or directly equivalent discipline (required)
  • 2 years of experience working in a same or similar position (required)
  • Knowledge of genetic testing options
  • Knowledge of genetic conditions
  • Strong oral and written communication

Responsibilities

  • Gathers family and medical history and provides counsel to patients and/or families in cases of genetic disorders or birth defects.
  • Discusses benefits and limitations of genetic testing options.
  • Obtains informed consent and interested patients.
  • Documents in patient charts and develops follow-up recommendations for patient; documents case and maintains appropriate records, ensuring confidentiality.
  • Assists families and understanding genetic disorders in their families, probable course of the disorder, available management strategies, medical recommendations from the geneticist and recurrence risks.
  • Develops and presents educational and related programs as appropriate.
  • Coordinates and supports the execution of research of protocol as needed, including recruitment and assessment of research subjects, provision of patient advice and support, and maintenance of research records.
  • Performs associated administrative or clerical tasks, which may include special projects, correspondence, and program funding activities.
  • Provides patient care/counseling to all patients of childbearing age.
