Job Summary The genetic counselor will work as part of a team in the pediatric genetics clinic, alongside a clinical geneticist and another genetic counselor, and provide genetic counseling services for patients and/or families suspected of having an underlying genetic disorder, including patient intake and triage, initial history taking and pre-test counseling and consenting, communication of results and education, and follow-up support. Assess the needs of patients, significant others and family members. Obtains insurance pre-authorization, drafts letters of medical necessity and processes billing. Facilitate appropriate medical and psychosocial follow-up for high-risk patients and their families. Acts as a patient or family advocate. Documents care/teaching consistent with documentation guidelines and regulatory standards. Communicates and collaborates with other members of the health care team in order to ensure continuity of care and coordination of services. Attends and presents relevant conferences as it relates to clinical genetics and other healthcare. Networks locally and nationally to increase awareness of the Beaumont Clinical Genetics Program. Participates in regional and national professional organizations to promote genetics best practices. Participates in educational programs for other health care professionals, educators or lay public. Supports and participates in a collaborative team-oriented environment – cooperates and works together with all co-workers, plans and completes job duties, uses appropriate communications in sensitive and emotional situations and follows up as appropriate regarding reported complaints, problems and concerns.
