About The Position

Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Clinics is home to the largest laboratory in NH, providing Pathology and Clinical Laboratory services to DHMC & Clinics physician practices, Dartmouth Health system member hospitals, as well as to independent practices and hospitals throughout NH and VT. The department is a leader in process improvement (LEAN/Six Sigma), resulting in a renovated space designed for workflow efficiency. The Genetic Counselor, as a part of the Lab-Molecular Pathology team, collaborates with clinicians and Clinical Laboratory Scientists to guide test selection, communicate results, and support quality, regulatory, and research efforts within the lab. This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week on-site position working Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Flexibility in working hours is required.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Genetic Counseling or the equivalent in education and experience required.
  • Excellent communication skills required.
  • Licensed Genetic Counselor NH OR Temp Lic Gen Counselor NH within 14 days.
  • Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC) OR Certified Genetic Counselor (CGC-ABMGG) within 1095 days.
  • If certified Genetic counselor prior to 1991, certification from the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics required.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates aspects of genetic consultations for individuals and families.
  • Provides triage for referrals, incoming calls, and inpatient consults.
  • Obtains and evaluates individual, pregnancy, medical, and family histories to determine genetic risk for genetic or medical conditions in a patient, their offspring, and other family members.
  • Discusses the features, natural history, means of diagnosis, genetic and environmental factors, and management for genetic or medical conditions with patients and families.
  • Identifies and coordinates genetic laboratory tests and other diagnostic studies for the genetic assessment.
  • Explains the clinical implications of the results of genetic laboratory tests or other diagnostic testing.
  • Integrates genetic laboratory results and other diagnostic studies with the personal and family histories to assess and communicate risk factors for genetic or medical conditions.
  • Evaluates a patient's or family's response to the genetic information reviewed and provide counseling.
  • Provides written documentation of phone calls and office notes in the electronic medical record and for families.
  • Participates in the teaching of residents, medical students, and other students.
  • Participates in the supervision of genetic counseling students.
  • Assists with data entry and maintenance of the department database.
  • Participates in ongoing research activities of the program and the development of department protocols.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned.
