About The Position

The North Carolina Aquariums on Roanoke Island is seeking a dynamic, efficient, and enthusiastic individual to join our team as a General Utility Woker. This is a manual work position consisting primarily of tasks associated with housekeeping. Additional tasks may include grounds maintenance, vehicle care, and some light building maintenance. Employees perform a variety of physical labor tasks requiring some knowledge and experience to accomplish their particular work assignments. Duties performed are generally at, or below, the trades helper or apprentice level. Work is performed with only general supervision in repetitive and routine assignments and may be closely supervised when assisting higher-level tradesman in performing more complex work.

Requirements

  • Education and/or experience in the performance of a variety of manual tasks that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade equivalent to one year of experience.
  • Must be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Weekend and holiday work will be required
  • Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience operating basic electrical power tools and/or carpentry hand tools.
  • Experience cleaning (such as office, business, or commercial cleaning).
  • Experience with reading, writing and interpreting information such as equipment guides, procedures manuals, safety data sheets, policies and procedures, codes, regulations, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Cleaning floors, walls, offices, and public areas. This includes restrooms for staff and public, food service areas, teaching labs, gift shops, auditorium, courtyards, admissions area, husbandry quarantine and holding areas, and the natural habitat area (greenhouse)
  • Manage all recycling (cans, bottles, cardboard, paper, etc.).
  • Routine cleaning of all windows, doors, exhibits, etc.
  • Removing trash from public and staff containers
  • Cleaning furniture and fixtures in office and work areas
  • Grounds maintenance tasks including mowing, trimming, mulching, raking, planting, pruning, and watering of plants
  • Moving of lawn furniture, food service fixtures, stocking vending machines, raising and lowering of flags daily and cleaning and repairs to outdoor exhibits and graphics will be additional responsibilities.
  • Maintaining and cleaning state vehicles
  • Setting up rooms, conferences for public and private meetings, and events both inside and outside of the facility
  • Loading and unloading or assisting with loading and unloading of packages and supplies. Stocking in appropriate storage areas will also be necessary.
  • Conducting minor maintenance and repairs on the facility and grounds, including unclogging drains, replacing fixtures and bulbs, sanding and painting walls and exhibits, laying carpet and tile, and other repair needs.
