About The Position

This is a repost. Previous applicants must reapply to be considered. This posting is for a General Utility Worker in the Macon County Equipment Shop. Responsibilities include a variety of manual labor tasks in the upkeep of the Department's standards, such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, removing trash, cleaning windows, cleaning restrooms, yard maintenance, washing equipment, light mechanical repairs and assisting VERTs in various projects, picking up parts, and performing other related duties as required. Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Ability to perform duties of position in accordance with all safety regulations; prepare and maintain paperwork essential to employment, equipment repair, inventory, and service records; understand both written and oral instructions; move parts and material necessary to repair and maintain equipment; and safely operate equipment for testing purposes. Ability to demonstrate commitment to provide safe working environment by leading by example. Ability to read and interpret Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) manuals.

Requirements

  • Education and/or experience in the performance of a variety of manual tasks that is directly related to the job and consistent with accepted practices of the trade equivalent to one year of experience.
  • Ability to perform duties of position in accordance with all safety regulations
  • understand both written and oral instructions
  • The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A CDL with Tanker (N) endorsement.
  • Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be maintained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49CFR383) within 360 days of hire.
  • Safety toe shoes required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience using small hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, post hole diggers, hammer, screwdriver, torch, etc.
  • Experience operating power tools such as lawn mowers, hand trimmers, air compressors, chainsaw, weed eater, skill saw, drill, etc.
  • Experience performing manual labor
