About The Position

Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Requirements

  • GTT II = 1 year experience
  • GTT III = 2 years' experience
  • (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • GTT II: Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement or have obtained a CDL "A” License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
  • GTT III: Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License with an "N" Endorsement at time of application.
  • Currently Military or Veterans: US Military CDL Equivalent Conditions of Employment: US Military License candidates must successfully obtain Texas Class “A” CDL within 120 days of employment. https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/military-skills-test-waiver
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic
  • Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mowers
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
  • May serve as a work crew project lead ensuring work performed meets project specifications
  • Trains other employees.
