About The Position

The General Transportation Tech I and II positions involve performing routine transportation operations and maintenance support work. This includes roadway maintenance and repair, operating light and heavy equipment, conducting preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, managing traffic control, and assisting the public during emergency situations. Employees in these roles are expected to follow standard practices with minimal supervision. The essential duties for the General Transportation Tech I include assisting local law enforcement at accident sites, providing traffic control, maintaining highways and rights-of-way, and operating light equipment. The General Transportation Tech II has additional responsibilities, including serving as a maintenance contract inspector and operating heavy equipment.

Requirements

  • No education required for GTT I; GTT II requires 1 year of experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or heavy equipment operation.
  • Valid driver’s license at the time of application.
  • Must obtain a Commercial Class 'A' Driver's License with an 'N' Endorsement within 180 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites.
  • Assists stranded motorists as required.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs, and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers, and signs.
  • Hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards, and comfort stations.
  • Moves/picks up litter and roadway debris.
  • Operates light equipment such as front-end loaders, pneumatic rollers, rotary brooms, spreader boxes, backhoes, street sweepers, and mowers.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, and helps the public during emergencies.
  • Assists with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship.
  • Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on small projects (GTT II).
  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction sites.
  • Maintains construction project records and processes related paperwork.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, tractor-trailer haul trucks, and dump trucks.
  • Inspects materials, equipment, and production procedures to ensure compliance with specifications.
