About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) has two (2) current vacancies for the position of General Trades Worker with Connecticut Valley Hospital (CVH) and Whiting Forensic Hospital (WFH)! Please note: These positions are Hazardous Duty. DMHAS is a health care agency whose mission is to promote the overall health and wellness of persons with behavioral health needs through an integrated network of holistic, comprehensive, effective, and efficient services and supports that foster dignity, respect, and self-sufficiency in those we serve. CVH opened in 1868 as the State's public hospital for the treatment of persons with mental illness. Today, CVH is the largest of DMHAS facilities, and includes 17 inpatient units over two campuses (Middletown and Hartford). The hospital includes both a general psychiatry and addiction services units. CVH provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care and substance abuse treatment, including treatment for pregnant women and persons with dual diagnoses. Specialty areas include geriatric and special services, an integrated network of comprehensive mental health services for older adults and young adult services. The facility also runs the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) program which addresses the needs of TBI survivors, including reintegration into community living, independent living skills development, vocational and educational training, psychiatric, cognitive and neurological assessment and treatment, speech and physical rehabilitation as well as individual and family counseling. Whiting Forensic Hospital specializes in providing inpatient services to individuals involved in the criminal justice system or are not yet ready to be safely treated in less restrictive settings. Services are provided to individuals who are admitted via Psychiatric Security Review Board (PSRB) commitment, criminal court order for restoration of competency to stand trial, civil commitment or transfer from the Department of Correction. Discharge options are dependent on legal status and the purpose of admission. The hospital consists of 91 maximum security beds and 138 enhanced security beds.

Requirements

Four (4) years of experience in one or more trade areas.
Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled trade functions in one or more trade areas.
Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply the standard tools, materials, methods, and practices of a variety of trade areas
Skills interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills
Ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records
Ability to utilize computer software
Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.

Nice To Haves

Experience in advanced building repairs in a variety of trades within a hospital setting
Experience in more than one trade such as plumbing, electrical, HVAC, painting and carpentry
Experience in a wide variety of preventative maintenance activities on building systems
Experience with inspecting, diagnosing, and performing advanced building repairs

Responsibilities

Performs highly skilled maintenance and/or construction work requiring the application of trade skills, codes, and standard trade practices in a variety of trade areas including but not limited to: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVACR, glazing, masonry, painting work, etc
Makes estimates of time, personnel, and material required on assigned tasks
Keeps necessary records
Performs duties related to the trade or trade areas as required
In smaller trade areas, may be the sole worker running a skilled trade area
At state owned airports may be required to stand by for and respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations
May operate and maintain heavy earth moving equipment
Performs related duties as required
