About The Position

The State of Connecticut, Department of Developmental Services (DDS) is seeking a General Trades Worker (GTW) position to be based in Meriden. This role is indispensable, providing critical oversight and maintenance for 19 Community Living Arrangements (including 3 respite homes) as well as 4 office facilities. This position will be responsible for the general building maintenance and renovations of all of homes in the region, the regional center and other office areas. The GTW role is a vital part of maintaining the health and safety conditions of our critical facilities to maintain compliance with licensing, DPH and the State Fire Marshal's office.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of experience in one or more trade areas.
  • Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled trade functions in one or more trade areas.

Nice To Haves

  • Trade school diploma/certificate in Plumbing, Electrical, HVAC, Carpentry or Locksmith.
  • Experience operating trucks and power equipment.
  • Experience responding to emergency need.
  • Experience providing emergency/on-call snow removal duties.
  • Experience operating lawn and garden equipment.
  • Experience driving small dump truck with trailer.
  • Experience with computers including Microsoft Office products such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, etc.
  • Experience using internet browsers to utilize Work Order systems.
  • Experience working in facilities occupied by persons with disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Performs highly skilled maintenance and/or construction work requiring the application of trade skills, codes, and standard trade practices in a variety of trade areas including but not limited to: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVACR, glazing, masonry, painting work, etc.
  • Makes estimates of time, personnel, and material required on assigned tasks.
  • Keeps necessary records.
  • Performs duties related to the trade or trade areas as required.
  • In smaller trade areas, may be the sole worker running a skilled trade area.
  • At state owned airports may be required to stand by for and respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations.
  • May operate and maintain heavy earth moving equipment.
  • May operate trucks and power equipment.
  • Will perform snow removal duties.
  • Performs related duties as required.
