About The Position

FD Thomas is seeking an experienced General Superintendent to oversee operations within our industrial paint shop and manage field and shop‑based projects across Southern California. This is a leadership role for someone who excels in coordination, scheduling, workforce development, and delivering high‑quality work in fast‑paced industrial environments. This position manages the full operational flow of the paint shop, supports field projects, allocates manpower, and ensures consistent delivery on quality, safety, and production expectations. You'll lead a talented and diverse workforce-foremen, journeymen, apprentices, and shop personnel-and work closely with clients, internal teams, and subcontractors to keep work moving efficiently and professionally.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in industrial painting/coating or similar industrial environments.
  • Demonstrated success supervising crews and managing multiple concurrent projects.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and customer‑facing skills.
  • Ability to read/understand MSDS, JSAs, procedures, and manufacturer specs.
  • Medical clearance for tight‑fitting respirator use.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for regional projects.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in industrial shop operations preferred (coatings, blasting, specialty finishing).
  • OSHA 10 or 30 certification is a plus.
  • Bilingual Spanish a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as Competent Person and enforce all safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain a safe and productive shop and field work environment.
  • Ensure PPE usage, environmental controls, and hygiene requirements.
  • Promote a zero‑incident culture and recognize safe behaviors.
  • Oversee manpower planning and ensure qualified labor availability.
  • Supervise shop personnel.
  • Coordinate activities across multiple projects and shop operations.
  • Train, evaluate shop personnel.
  • Work as a hands-on leader – working alongside your team when needed.
  • Provide safety, equipment, and process training.
  • Mentor team members on quality, productivity, and procedural expectations.
  • Lead toolbox talks and new hire orientations.
  • Ensure compliance with specifications and eliminate rework.
  • Manage shop output, production efficiency, and job costs.
  • Ensure crews have proper tools, equipment, materials, and resources.
  • Conduct and execute daily Plan of the Day meetings.
  • Plan, organize, and schedule shop activities and field support tasks.
  • Coordinate with clients on job requirements, staging, logistics, and inspections.
  • Maintain daily and weekly reports, signing time clocks, and documentation.
  • Ensure proper work releases and approvals prior to starting work.
  • Utilize respiratory, hearing, and fall protection PPE as required.
  • Support additional operational needs assigned.
