About The Position

Under the direction of the Stores Administrator, the General Repair Worker position for the Department of Utilities, Logistics Division, is responsible for supporting the department's operations by managing the Tool Room. This position's duties include, but are not limited to, maintaining and distributing the tools and small equipment used to maintain and repair the City's vast water, wastewater, and drainage systems. Additional responsibilities include managing and updating the tool inventory software system; issuing and receiving tools; performing maintenance and repairs of tools; documenting work in tool inventory software system; performing tool inventory cycle counts and year-end counts; providing tool replacement and purchase recommendations; and assisting with other program areas as requested. IDEAL CANDIDATE STATEMENT The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, have excellent customer service skills, be open to learning, and be able to manage priorities in a continuously evolving work environment. Experience with inventory software is preferred. Experience with work orders is desired. To perform a variety of repair, maintenance, and fabrication tasks involving City-owned equipment, facilities, and tools.

Requirements

  • Principles, practices, methods, materials, tools, and supplies used in repairing and maintaining small engines, metal parts, and machinery.
  • Welding practices, methods, tools, and materials.
  • Safe and efficient work practices.
  • Operation and maintenance of four-cycle and two-cycle engines.
  • Identify mechanical problems and take corrective action, often with significant independence.
  • Perform a wide variety of repair, maintenance, and fabrication tasks in a shop or field setting.
  • Work effectively with those encountered in the normal course of work.
  • Understand and act upon written and oral directions.
  • Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be three years of experience in the repair and maintenance of small engines and field construction equipment.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment. Loss of the Class C License is cause for discipline. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Responsibilities

  • Repair and maintain small motorized equipment such as mowers, edgers, chain saws, aerators, chippers, generators, and leaf blowers.
  • Identify equipment repair problems and take corrective action.
  • Operate welding, lathe, and grinding equipment to fabricate and repair.
  • Perform repairs in a maintenance shop or in the field, as required.
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems and perform preventive maintenance on power-driven small equipment.
  • Recommend purchase or replacement of equipment, tools, and related supplies.
  • Fabricate specialized and made-to-order parts for municipal facilities.
  • Clean and overhaul small engines and install replacement parts as necessary.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
