About The Position

As the General Manager for the Alaska Railroad with ESS Support Services Worldwide, you will be responsible for maintaining the account in accordance with the approved budget while meeting client expectations. You will be expected to build and maintain excellent relationships with employees, guests, the client, and other departments within the operation. Additionally, you will be responsible for promoting the professional growth and development of the entire team. You will oversee the Alaska Railroad Food Service Project and manage all organizational, physical and financial aspects of the operation. This includes handling budgeting, financial overview, organizational structure, staff training and management, employee and client relations. During the summer season, the expected required workload is approximately 40 to 60 hours per week, depending on business demand.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred, or equivalent professional experience
  • Eight to ten years of management of multiple food service venues
  • Experience in personnel management including hiring, supervision, evaluation and succession planning
  • Proven track record to achieve company goals in compliance with company/client policies and procedures
  • Excellent leadership and organizational skills, and must possess attention to detail
  • Supervisory, scheduling, training and coaching skills
  • Effective problem solving and conflict management skills
  • Experience in food purchasing, food costs and inventory control
  • Ability to create budgets, flash reports, financial targets and forecasts
  • Must be knowledgeable on HACCP controls along with proper storage and use of food
  • Exceptional business etiquette and client relations
  • Manages time effectively and prioritizes tasks to meet deadlines
  • Strong catering experience required
  • Conformity to the highest standards of personal integrity and ethical behavior
  • Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • TIPS, TAP or Alaska Responsible Serving of Alcohol
  • ServSafe Food Protection Manager or equivalent
  • The role requires the ability to stand for extended periods, lift up to 50 pounds, and perform tasks that involve reaching and balancing.
  • Vision abilities include close and peripheral vision.
  • Employees may encounter moving machinery, heat, and cleaning chemicals in a moderately loud environment.

Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises 6+ supervisory and non-supervisory staff and is responsible for overseeing up to 100 employees in food and facility services on multiple mobile rail lines.
  • Directly manage staff in line with organizational policies and legal requirements, including hiring, training, and performance appraisal.
  • Address employee complaints and resolve conflicts in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Approve hiring for all positions, set expectations for team roles, and develop service and culinary standards.
  • Ensure compliance with HR paperwork and provide training for assistant managers and supervisors.
  • Oversee all financial aspects of the project, ensuring timely payroll and accurate financial reporting.
  • Collaborate with senior directors and accounting staff on invoicing and budget development and ensure adherence to budgetary guidelines.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Chef on menu development and maintain food purchase agreements with vendors.
  • Ensure food and beverage costs align with the budget.
  • Ensure compliance with ESS safety policies and work with the HSE Manager on accident reporting.
  • Maintain a zero-incident record.
