About The Position

The General Manager (GM) is assigned a regional area distribution center (DC) and serves as a key P&L leader within the company’s network and as a member of the leadership team, responsible for all commercial and operational matters related to their DC. The GM will establish the company’s presence in the area market, build a solid distribution operation aligned with established company policies and procedures, and assemble a core support team to grow and scale profitably. More specifically, the GM will be directly responsible for all functional areas of the area DC and associated satellite locations, including territory sales representatives, customer service, collections, and warehouse and last-mile delivery operations. The GM should possess key experiences in scaling new commercial and warehouse operations; recruiting and building new teams across relevant functions; and fostering an inclusive culture, managing change and developing processes. This is a rapidly transforming company. As such, we are targeting a leader who is commercially entrepreneurial, operationally focused, and a proven champion and driver of growth while leveraging a proven business model.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degrees preferred.
  • At least ten years of progressive general, multi-functional management experience, including five or more years of direct P&L experience.
  • Preferably, a background in an operationally intensive last-mile distribution business, including multi-site leadership; plus, a combination of high-growth hands-on experience, as well as exposure to larger company best-in-class processes.
  • Ability to build and scale a distribution business from the ground up, building upon a successful business model and established processes.
  • Expertise in all general DC management functional areas, including sales, customer service, collections, warehouse operations, quality/inspection, facility and fleet management, scheduling/routing, and delivery.
  • Knowledge of best-in-class warehousing and distribution functions, with the ability to set goals to reach that point.
  • Experience working with diverse workforce; possesses the depth of experience and leadership style to effectively manage a distributed employee base.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilize innovative strategies to recruit and retain highly skilled and in-demand talent.
  • A genuine, approachable, and trustworthy individual who can easily form relationships and partner with employees at all levels of the organization and quickly establish themselves as a key member of the business leadership team.
  • An inspirational, authentic leader with strong business acumen. An individual who wants to engage with employees across all levels of the DC and inspire a collaborative atmosphere and culture.
  • An entrepreneurial, hands-on leader who is not afraid to roll up their sleeves to get things done timely. Someone with the ability to work with and scale a lean team.
  • A builder mentality, always looking to iterate and improve on existing programs and implement new approaches.
  • Currently resides in the metro Atlanta area or willing to relocate. Able to travel across the region and, on occasion, to other DC locations. Able to travel extensively to other DCs during the initial onboarding period.

Responsibilities

  • Rapidly grow profitable revenue across their region by evangelizing Empire’s value proposition of high-quality parts and exceptional customer service and consistently executing the company’s business model.
  • Develop and manage customer relationships and service levels across the area. Collaborate and coordinate with other GMs and company leaders to secure and sustain strong relationships with larger, multi-location customers and related constituents, including area insurance representatives.
  • Learn, document, deploy and adhere to operating policies and procedures that underpin Empire’s competitive advantages, including high part availability, easy ordering, frequent and on-time deliveries, and streamlined returns.
  • Proactively identify, incubate, and deploy best practices across all functions, and advocate for adoption of these across the company. Promote an environment for continuous improvement.
  • Recruit, onboard, train and empower sales and operations leaders and team members. Align organization and define objectives to deliver on key company service expectations and financial metrics.
  • Collaborate with other GMs and senior leaders on key initiatives and inter-DC operations. Provide support and assistance in special situations to benefit the broader organization.
  • Nurture and grow the Empire culture as the company scales in the southeast region and beyond.
  • Partner with the executive team to advise and guide the strategy of the overall organization.
