About The Position

General Maintenance Worker/Electrician performs highly skilled maintenance, installation, repair, and troubleshooting work with electrical systems. Electrical work may be performed in a number of areas, including heating, refrigeration, motors, fire alarms, and generator equipment. This list of duties and responsibilities is illustrative only of the tasks performed by this position and is not all-inclusive.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma.
  • Three (3) years of experience working as an electrician.
  • Must possess a valid Driver’s License and be 21 years of age or older.
  • Must be able to successfully pass the Employee Health requirements and background investigation.
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of houses, buildings, or other structures, such as highways and roads.
  • Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language, including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer need assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Knowledge of all construction and maintenance work, including electrical, plant operation, carpentry, masonry, plumbing, painting, and power equipment and tool maintenance.
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and the Joint Commission standards, the National Electrical Code, OSHA, and NFPA Codes.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the principles, methods, tools, and equipment used in building maintenance programs.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of safety standards and provisions of the hospital regulations applicable to maintenance and construction work.
  • Knowledge of energy and natural resource conservation techniques, including energy conservation projects and cost-effective operating techniques.
  • Knowledge of how equipment functions, how components of complex systems are supposed to work together, and how to troubleshoot and diagnose types of malfunctions frequently encountered in boiler, water heating, electrical and plumbing systems.
  • Ability to read blueprints and diagrammed plans and prepare working sketches.
  • Ability to estimate materials and supplies needed to complete projects.
  • Ability to establish work priorities that meet organizational needs.
  • Ability to maintain records/logs in daily routine, inspections, wells, boilers, buildings, domestic water systems, parts, materials, supplies, and ordering needed materials.
  • Skill in operating and maintaining heating systems, domestic water, and wastewater systems to maximum efficiencies.
  • Ability to make emergency repairs to the chlorinating system.
  • Ability to be "On-Call" Graveyards, Saturday(s) and Sunday(s), also, Holidays on rotation as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Journeyman Electrician Certification preferred.
  • Ability to speak the Navajo Language and/or familiarity with the Navajo Way preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble, install, test, and maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
  • Connect wires to the circuit breakers, transformers, or other components.
  • Inspect electrical systems, equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.
  • Advise management on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous.
  • Test electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using testing devices such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, and oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of system.
  • Maintain current electrician’s license or identification card to meet governmental regulations.
  • Plan layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures, based on job specifications and local codes.
  • Direct and train workers to install, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures.
  • Prepare sketches or follow blueprints to determine the location of wiring and equipment and to ensure conformance to building and safety codes.
  • Use a variety of tools and equipment such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment, including oscilloscopes, ammeters, and test lamps.
  • Install ground leads and connect power cables to equipment, such as motors, etc.
  • Perform business management duties such as maintaining records and files, preparing reports and ordering supplies and equipment.
  • Repair or replace wiring, equipment, and fixtures, using hand tools and power tools.
  • Work from ladders, scaffolds, and roofs to install, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment, and fixtures.
  • Place conduit (pipes or tubing) inside designated partitions, walls, or other concealed areas, and pull insulated wires or cables through the conduit to complete circuits between boxes.
  • Construct and fabricate parts, using hand tools and specifications.
  • Fasten small metal or plastic boxes to walls to house electrical switches or outlets.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks, such as digging trenches to lay conduit and moving and lifting heavy objects.
  • Provide preliminary sketches and cost estimates for materials and services.
  • Provide assistance during emergencies by operating floodlights and generators, placing flares, and driving needed vehicles.
  • Responsible for maintenance and upkeep of all NHF buildings and employee residences.
  • Plan and coordinate activities of general maintenance workers.
  • Responsible for development and implementation of an ongoing Preventive Electrical Maintenance program.
  • Responsible for maintaining electrical compliance with local, state, and/or federal building codes, fire and safety regulations, and environmental health regulations.
  • Follows oral instructions or written work orders concerning the location of the job and the work to be completed while exercising independent judgment with minimal direct supervision.
  • Exercise independent judgement, make selections from a wide variety of materials and equipment, and substitute on his/her initiative.
  • Accountable for the quantity and quality of work done, directing the work operations, passing on orders and instructions, and is responsible to the supervisor for:
  • Demonstrate proper work methods.
  • Ensure that needed plans, blueprints, materials, and tools are available.
  • Obtain needed information or decisions from supervisors on problems that come up during the work.
  • Maintain current knowledge when answering questions from other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives.
  • Assure that safety and housekeeping rules are followed.
  • Complete work once in progress and inform departments of the location of the worksite and provide an estimated completion time.
  • Reports on the status and progress of work, forecasting potential delays, and answers questions on overall work operations and problems.
  • Replace electrical switches, switch plates, outlets, light fixtures, etc., and make repairs to frayed or broken wiring. Check for malfunctions in various electrical equipment, such as automatic switching units, thermostats, small equipment transformers, motors, and pilot light controls. Correct the problem by adjusting or replacing the unit or defective parts.
  • Perform troubleshooting with various types of meters or instruments on electrical equipment, boilers, furnaces, kitchen equipment, well controls, pump/motors, electrical controls, lighting, and electrical systems. Maintain and operate low-pressure boilers of various types.
  • Periodically observe meters/charts to determine such things as heat and water requirements/utilization; pressures, water, and steam flow, etc., and determine proper adjustments necessary for maximum efficiency and utilization.
  • Check various types of equipment, e.g., fire alarm systems, nurse call system, special systems, refrigeration units, etc., conduct minor maintenance and replace controls, starters, etc., report major problems to the Facility Manager.
  • Responsible for ensuring proper operation of all electrical components of well pumps through periodic checks of water storage tanks for adequate water level. Perform minor service, repair, and manual operation of the pumps. Perform periodic minor adjustments when necessary.
  • Maintain cooperative communication with other NHF departments to coordinate services for better patient care.
  • Provide inventory control of supplies and equipment assigned to the department. Maintain Preventive Maintenance and Quality Control records as necessary.
  • Responsibility includes serving as the electrician for NHF facilities.
  • Discuss job requests with the requesting department to clarify needs.
  • Estimate costs of material and labor on large projects.
  • Conduct inspections to determine adherence to plans and specifications.
  • Ensure compliance with Federal, State, and The Joint Commission (TJC) standards on all modifications or changes to SMH facilities; serve as technical advisor on facility maintenance, including housing, grounds, boiler system, biomedical equipment, preventive maintenance, electrical systems, TJC requirements, and nationally recognized codes (NFPA, OSHA, NIOSHA, NEC, etc.).
  • Develop methods and techniques to perform Direct Preventive Maintenance activities on utility systems to provide continuous service of electrical physical plant to determine adequacy of the preventive maintenance program.
  • Assure operational safety of all hospital equipment.
  • Establish and maintain records on all preventive maintenance activities.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance program on SMH owned appliances located in staff housing. Work closely with outside contractors who may perform portions of the preventive maintenance program.
  • Perform any knowledge, Journeyman-level skills in the fields of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, masonry, etc., as appropriate to the needs of the Foundation.
  • Participate in and attend in-service and educational programs.
  • Meet and comply with the standards of the NHF Personnel Manual.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Subject to on-call shifts in the event of emergencies after normal hours on weekdays, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must assist in the “Emergency Response Team’ on call duties.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
