About The Position

Under general supervision, this position directs the activities of maintenance personnel and/or crews responsible for performing general maintenance work on City buildings, facilities, and grounds.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Local ordinances and building codes.
  • Knowledge of general characteristics of facilities, machinery, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of tools, materials, methods, and procedures used in building maintenance and repair.
  • Knowledge of proper safety practices, procedures, and regulations applicable to work being performed.
  • Skill in evaluating needs for routine and/or emergency maintenance and repairs.
  • Skill in establishing work priorities.
  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus five (5) years of experience in general building and construction work, two years of which were in a lead/supervisory capacity.
  • Must have or be able to obtain within 90 days of employment, a valid Texas driver's license.
  • External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.
  • Tasks may involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying or using a force equal to lifting up to lifting up to thirty-five (35) pounds.
  • Must be physically and mentally able to communicate, respond, and work with participant’s needs and safety issues.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct work experience supervising a preventative maintenance team in a governmental or municipal setting.
  • Direct work experience related to administrative oversight of payroll, work logs, and employee files.
  • Direct work experience with budget development, managing revenues, forecasts, expenses for maintenance operations.
  • Direct work experience with the governmental or municipality procurement process and/or contracts.
  • Direct work experience with public facing customer service, including dealing with customer concerns and/or complaints.
  • Proficient computer programs, including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
  • Proficient in software such as Workday and Maximo.
  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.

Responsibilities

  • Inspects construction and construction sites for compliance with codes, specifications, safety ordinances, etc.; enforces safety rules.
  • Assists in developing operating budget for division.
  • Orders and issue supplies, parts, etc.
  • Develops and revises operating procedures.
  • Trains personnel in performance of job tasks; develops work schedule; assigns job duties and monitors task completion; and reviews work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Reads profiles and blueprints; inspects buildings and equipment for needed repairs and maintenance.
  • Responsible for the full range of supervisory activities including selection, training, evaluation, and recommendation for dismissal.
