About The Position

General Maintenance Mechanic General Description The General Maintenance Mechanic, under general supervision, maintains and repairs a variety of fleet vehicles, construction or heavy equipment, train engines and coaches, golf carts, building generators, equipment and machinery. Principal Duties and Responsibilities Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs fleet vehicles which serve a wide variety of uses across many departments. Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs train engines and coaches and plays integral role in daily train operation through spring, summer and fall seasons. Maintains, troubleshoots and repairs construction (heavy) equipment used by Construction Equipment Operators. Examples of such pieces are street sweeper, packer garbage truck, telehandler, skid steers, backhoe/loader, dump trucks, bucket trucks. Maintains, troubleshoots, repairs golf cart fleet used across many departments to navigate zoo grounds. Experience with electrical systems related to golf cart components would be preferred. Maintains, troubleshoots, repairs generators that provide backup power sources for buildings across campus. Keeps inventory of fueling systems for DZS fleet vehicles and equipment. Orders and monitors delivery of unleaded and diesel fuel as needed. Assists in regular UST inspections as needed and reports any issues with fueling systems so they can be addressed. Monitors and utilizes work order system to address requested needs from other departments in a timely manner. Welds and/or fabricates metal components to facilitate repairs or installation of equipment or machines. Uses working knowledge of hydraulic systems to maintain, troubleshoot and repair large door systems for large or dangerous animals. Maintains, troubleshoots, repairs variety of landscape equipment including but not limited to: mowers, chainsaws, blowers, weed whips, edgers, hedgers, plows, and salters. Safely utilizes implements at the maintenance shop to maintain, troubleshoot and repair vehicles and equipment mentioned previously, including but not limited to: hoists, chain fall, parts cleaner, portable generators, compressors, etc. Seasonal maintenance of other rides and/or attractions as needed (Carousel) Assists with setup/break down of Showmobile utilized for public and private events at the Zoo. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned from time to time based on organizational needs.

Requirements

  • High school diploma of GED
  • 5 years of experience with an expertise or focus on 1 or more of the Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Michigan Department of State Motor Vehicle Mechanic Certificate
  • Must possess a valid State of Michigan driver’s license
  • Required to provide the tools necessary to perform the majority of work outlined above.
  • Ability to weld, braze and cut with electric arc or acetylene torch.
  • Reasonable knowledge of the tools, methods and materials used to maintain, troubleshoot and repair automotive and related mechanical equipment.
  • Familiarity with the tools, methods and materials used in the metal working trades.

Nice To Haves

  • Certifications in more than 1 of the following: Heavy Equipment Technician
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certifications
  • Rides and Attractions Certification
