About The Position

The General Foreman I/II is responsible for directing the operation of an area performing inspections, running repairs, maintenance, modifications, and/or light overhauls for cars and/or locomotives in operating divisions. This includes the utilization of small to large production machinery and materials, overseeing a team of 50 to 75 mechanics, laborers, technicians, and supervisors. The role requires efficient use of personnel, timely performance of work, quality of work, and management of the associated budget. The position involves local commuter, regional, and state mechanical efforts, including contractors and various sites.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field required or equivalent combination of training, education, and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working on machinery in an industrial, marine, railroad, or plant environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership/management experience.
  • Experience in diagnosing and troubleshooting electrical and/or mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge and experience related to safety program methodology.

Nice To Haves

  • 3 or more years of relevant experience preferred.
  • PC skills including word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
  • Ability to be sole supervisor at various times.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises equipment inspection, maintenance, and repair programs.
  • Provides diagnostic and troubleshooting expertise to increase equipment availability and reliability.
  • Maintains oversight responsibility for communication of mechanical and safety issues.
  • Engages with the Safety Management System to identify risks.
  • Supervises maintenance of rolling stock equipment in accordance with Amtrak and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversees scheduling and execution of work orders for assigned equipment.
  • Reviews daily reports to ensure proper recording of inspection and work order results.
  • Monitors availability and reliability metrics.
  • Participates in Maintenance Effectiveness Reviews.
  • Ensures proper training for foremen and mechanical craft employees.
  • Leads and implements safety plans and programs.
  • Communicates effectively with various mechanical support groups.
  • Recognizes and develops prospective leaders.
