Summary: The General Counsel serves as the chief legal advisor to the organization, providing strategic legal guidance across all aspects of construction operations, including contracts, risk management, compliance, litigation, and corporate governance. This role partners closely with executive leadership to support business growth while mitigating legal and regulatory risks.

Requirements

  • JD from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed in DC, Virginia or Maryland a preferred if not the ability to get reciprocity in DC and enroll in VA Corporation Counsel,
  • Possesses experience litigating all types of construction disputes, including delay and disruption claims payment disputes such as a mechanics lien, bond, and stop notice claims, construction defect litigation,
  • 6 to 10 years of litigation experience,
  • Experience with construction contracts, construction claims, construction labor laws matters, insurance defense, general liability and auto/transportation liability,
  • Superior analytical skills,
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills,
  • Ability to manage a caseload independently,
  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug screen and background test.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a trusted legal advisor to the day-to-day company’s business sectors and /or departments including contracts, procurement, subcontracting, finance and human resources,
  • Independently manages a caseload involving insurance defense, general liability, auto/transportation liability, construction, claims, transactional work, litigation, contract drafting/ review, investigations and appeals,
  • Works closely with key members of the executive leadership team,
  • Responsible for handling own docket and managing their case load from inception through resolution,
  • Provides legal oversight and support for other transactional legal work, including the review, drafting and negotiation of both commercial and public sector agreements,
  • Interprets contract terms, assess business and legal risks to minimize loss and liability and communicates such to management and other internal clients,
  • Assists with the company’s responses from the proposal stage (including RFP response) through contract execution and assists with respect to contract compliance on a “go forward” basis,
  • Responds to ad hoc queries to include indentification,analysis and evaluation of risk in order to provide appropriate legal solutions,
  • Provides risk management analysis related to general business practices and monitors claims against or on behalf of the company,
  • Advises on legal issues involving government and regulatory Compliance,
  • Provides legal support on major business transactions, corporate matters, and employment issues,
  • Participates in the review analysis, and execution of Government Contract opportunities to ensure compliance with company policies and US Laws and regulations,
  • Participates in the definition, development and continuing legal oversight of corporate policies.
  • Represents the company in different aspects of federal procurements including bid protests, contract review and negotiation, performance and terminations, government investigations, dispute resolution and litigation,
  • Draft analysis and review construction claims,
  • Interprets, manages and updates various internal policies, templates and requirements,
  • Develops litigation strategies and negotiates settlements of disputes where warranted,
  • Oversees labor and employment issues including assisting Human Resources with labor law issues, investigations and workers compensation matters and EEOC issues,
  • Monitors and provides continuous counsel on State and Federal Law,
  • Creates templates and form contracts for routine transactions,
  • Identifies, implements, and evaluates best practices to maximize reports and project service delivery,
  • Assist with overseeing the department and staff performance objectives and provides ongoing feedback; assists with writing and conducting performance reviews that clearly set goal and objectives,
  • Develop and maintains deep knowledge of the Companies business strategy,
  • Should possess experience in construction litigation, appeals, contract drafting and review.
  • Communicate with internal and exterrnal customers and provides status reports, and
  • Litigation,
