About The Position
This position involves providing instructional support to teachers in the daily management and instruction of students within Virginia Beach City Public Schools. The General Assistant is responsible for performing a variety of clerical and instructional tasks aimed at relieving teachers of routine activities and facilitating daily classroom operations. The role requires close observation and reporting on student behavior and learning, and may involve working in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, special education classrooms, or computer learning centers. The assistant will closely monitor the needs of children, including their basic personal needs, physical assistance, and, when necessary, occasional restraint. All tasks performed are subject to detailed procedures that must be followed closely. Key responsibilities include following the instructional schedule developed by the supervising personnel, reinforcing skills taught by the classroom teacher to both small and large groups, and assisting with various instructional activities such as reading to students, providing library assistance, and recording information for younger students. The assistant will also help students with special assignments or academic challenges, encourage safety and good study habits, and assist with daily routine tasks like cafeteria and bus duty, money collection, and hall duty. Additionally, the assistant will prepare instructional materials as requested, assist in fire drills and other building security procedures, and perform designated learning tasks with students, which may include demonstrating lessons and prompting students for answers. The role also involves monitoring activities in drawing, writing, independent study, and other classroom activities, escorting students during field trips and physical activities, and maintaining various classroom records and supplies. The assistant may work with students requiring individual attention and will perform related duties as necessary.
