About The Position

The Virginian-Pilot is seeking a general assignment reporter to cover regional issues in Hampton Roads. We're looking for a digitally-savvy storyteller to craft compelling news features, unearth thought provoking data and trends, and report on how policy affects everyday people in the community.

Requirements

• Strong news judgment and a collaborative approach
• A passion for community-focused storytelling and reporting
• Ability to tell people-centered stories about policy issues across a variety of subjects
• Proficiency in various content creation formats
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation
• Must be available for shift work.
• May be required to work various hours for coverage outside of normal business hours
• Must be willing to submit and pass the necessary required checks
• A full pre-employment background check and MVR will be conducted as part of the selection process

Nice To Haves

• A college degree and at least two years of daily journalism experience (preferred)

Responsibilities

• Uncover and report on stories relevant to Hampton Roads residents
• Translate how policy affects everyday people in the Hampton Roads region
• Produce a variety of content, including breaking news, features, and explanatory stories
• Create diverse content including photos, videos, tweets, web updates, and in-depth print articles
• Collaborate effectively with reporters, photographers, and editors
