Project Description: Xcel Energy is seeking candidates to support our Integrated System Planning (ISP) organization, specifically, within the Gas Strategic Planning departments in Denver, CO or Minneapolis, MN. The paid internship provides an opportunity to showcase your abilities in the Gas Strategic Planning groups that support the long-term planning and vision of the Company’s natural gas systems. The program provides practical work experience to develop your existing skillset, present to senior leadership, and collaborate with key internal stakeholders. Each intern will be relied upon to play a role in achieving department objectives and goals. The program will allow you to apply what you’ve learned in school and further enhance your knowledge through hands-on training and provide opportunities to network and learn with other interns across the ISP organization. This position is for a June 1st, 2026 start. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship’s initial term based on the candidate’s successful performance and Xcel Energy’s business needs.

Requirements

  • Current student, Junior status (as of Fall 2026) or higher.
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Able to commute to the service centers in Denver, CO or Minneapolis, MN
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the fall (up to 20 hours a week).

Nice To Haves

  • 3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher
  • Completed 2 years of undergraduate coursework
  • Experience or Proficiency with engineering principles, including fluid dynamics.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to long-term reliability of the Company’s natural gas systems.
  • Learn to use various planning tools including hydraulic modeling software.
  • Assist with the Company’s annual Design Day planning process.
  • Develop processes to support strategic initiatives.
