Cedar Falls Utilities is currently recruiting for a full-time Gas Service Technician to join our Gas & Water Operations department. This position is r esponsible for servicing, repairing, and adjusting all types of gas-burning appliances and equipment. This position will also locate natural gas leaks inside and outside customer premises, and perform skilled and routine tasks involving water service to customers. Starting wage is based upon individual qualifications. Full position rate is $46.45/hour once a candidate can successfully perform the essential job functions. Work schedule is Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:00pm with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. Must be willing to work on-call rotation and overtime when necessary. Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or vocational school.
  • Completion of additional specialized training as provided through schools and training sessions is required on an ongoing basis.
  • A minimum of 4 years experience as a skilled Gas Service Technician on natural gas appliances, gas and water meters, gas piping and gas service lines, and water service work.
  • Required to have good driving record and valid Iowa driver’s license.
  • Required to pass all applicable Operator Qualification modules.
  • Must be able to obtain a journeyman mechanical contractors license issued by the city.
  • This position requires an employee to reside within 20 miles of the Main Office Building at 1 Utility Parkway, Cedar Falls.
  • Knowledge of: Methods, practices, equipment, and tools used by a Gas Service Technician in providing inspection, repair and adjustment on all types of natural gas-burning equipment.
  • Skills needed to install water meters and perform other customer related water service work.
  • Ability to: Communicate and deal effectively with customers and establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • This position is asked to voluntarily train and be tested to use the SCBA equipment.
  • If the employee wants to use the SCBA, they must have a pulmonary lung function test, which is required for respirator use.
  • The physical demands described here are characteristic of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.
  • The employee must occasionally lift at least 75 pounds, be alert to ergonomic hazards and possess the capability to climb ladders and/or stairs.
  • The employee must also be capable of working in conditions with awkward/difficult positions.
  • This job requires a moderate activity level.
  • This position requires a hearing exam and a pulmonary lung function test, which is required for respirator use.
  • May be required to be fit-tested for use of a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
  • Pre-employment drug screen and physical is required.

Responsibilities

  • Changes gas meters, regulators, water meters, and remotes as required.
  • Detects gas leaks and makes repairs.
  • Detects customer water leaks.
  • Services all types of natural gas furnaces, water heaters, and other gas appliances as needed.
  • Inspects installations of gas equipment for customers and sees that they comply with NFPA 54 and CFU regulations.
  • Checks to see that the various pressure requirements for gas-burning appliances.
  • Proper voltage for controls, etc. are being met.
  • Performs the various tests on gas-burning equipment that are required for safe efficient operation.
  • Investigates customer water service complaints.
  • Keeps time and work records and makes reports of customer service calls.
  • Disconnects customer gas-burning equipment and related piping that is found to be unsafe.
  • Performs field leak survey work on gas distribution system.
  • Locates and operates customer curb stops.
  • Assists in locating and operating water valves.
  • Performs the necessary pipe fitting work in the installation of gas meters, regulators, water meters, and remotes.
  • Performs building maintenance work as assigned.
  • Repairs and tests gas and water meters as assigned.
  • Completes miscellaneous work assignments in other areas of the Gas Operations Division.
  • Responsible for maintaining a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner that promotes positive relations with customers, coworkers, and management.
