About The Position

Locates sub-surface gas lines pursuant to Tennessee One-Call Regulations. Employees in this class are under general supervision. Work with gas crews when needed in other areas.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of natural gas distribution systems, including general layout, materials, and safe excavation practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable safety standards, including hazard recognition and proper use of personal protective equipment.
  • Knowledge of local streets, service areas, and the ability to effectively navigate within the City of Lebanon.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, construction drawings, and utility records.
  • Ability to accurately locate and mark underground utilities using appropriate tools and methods.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, complete reports, and document field activities.
  • Ability to evaluate situations in the field and make sound decisions, particularly in time-sensitive or high-risk environments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with contractors, customers, and co-workers in a professional manner.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other employees.
  • Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather and environmental conditions.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks associated with field locating activities.
  • Must qualify under and maintain compliance with the City of Lebanon Operator Qualification (OQ) Plan.
  • A High School Diploma or G.E.D is required.
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in pipefitting and in gas distribution or general construction work is required.
  • A valid driver’s License with a clear driving record is required. If a candidate does not have a valid Tennessee driver's license, they must acquire one within 30 days of hire.
  • Must qualify within the approved City of Lebanon Operator Qualification Program, subject to the current requirements of said program.
  • Employees in the Gas Department are required to maintain on-call availability due to the critical nature of the services provided. To ensure continuity of essential operations during events such as severe weather, power outages, or other emergencies, employees must be able to respond as needed outside of regular business hours.
  • This position is subject to on-call and call-back requirements, including availability for work during days, nights, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Employees must participate in a rotating on-call schedule and be prepared to report to duty or remain onsite during emergency operations as required.
  • Due to the on-call and emergency response nature of this position, the ideal candidate should reside in Wilson County or in one of the surrounding counties that border Wilson County, including Cannon, Davidson, DeKalb, Rutherford, Smith, Sumner, or Trousdale Counties.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs., though greater weights may at times be lifted, carried, or placed. Must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, stretch, and wall. Must be able to climb. Must be able to enter and exit vehicles on a regular basis. Dexterity and fitness are sufficient to safely operate, utilize, and maintain tools and equipment used in work.

Responsibilities

  • Locate and mark underground gas utilities in accordance with applicable state One Call laws, regulations, and industry standards to ensure safe excavation practices.
  • Receive, manage, and respond to 811 locate requests within required timeframes, ensuring accuracy and completeness of all markings.
  • Maintain clear and accurate records of locate tickets, field activities, and supporting documentation in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Prepare sketches, drawings, and field notes that accurately reflect underground facilities and work areas.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, customers, and other utilities regarding locate requests, site conditions, and safe digging practices.
  • Meet with customers, contractors, and developers to explain City policies, procedures, and requirements related to excavation near gas facilities.
  • Identify, document, and report damages to gas facilities, including completion of required reports such as DIRT (Damage Information Reporting Tool) documentation.
  • Participate in after-hours call-outs and emergency response activities as required.
  • Reliable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this role.
  • Promote a team-oriented work environment by assisting co-workers and supporting departmental operations as needed.
  • Maintain a high standard of professionalism in all interactions to positively represent the City of Lebanon Gas Department.
