About The Position

The Helper is responsible for assisting the refuse truck driver on pre-assigned and special routes to pick up garbage, yard waste, or recycling. This is a full-time position with shifts from Monday to Friday, starting early in the morning at 4 AM and ending at 2:30 PM. Some Saturdays may be required. The position pays $17.50 per hour, with time and a half after 40 hours. This job is classified as an OSHA "safety sensitive position," and candidates must be able to pass a background check and a full drug screen, including marijuana/THC.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the refuse truck driver on pre-assigned and special routes to pick up garbage, yard waste, or recycling.
  • Pick up solid waste and place it in the back of a rear load garbage truck on specified routes, often done manually or by pushing a totter to a tipper.
  • Lift and carry trash bags, bulk items, and containers to the truck for disposal.
  • Climb onto and off of the rear truck step to load refuse, waste, and carts.
  • Operate packing mechanism to compact waste into the truck.
  • Provide courteous and expeditious customer service in all aspects of refuse operation to the general public and customers.
  • Ensure garbage and recyclables at residences are picked up and transferred properly, which may require using the back door.
  • Answer questions for residents and direct them to contact Customer Service or appropriate government office for additional information.
  • Comply with all ANSI, OSHA, and company safety policies including Oak Ridge Waste Absolute Guidelines.
  • Assist Driver in safely backing up the truck by directing the Driver from the ground.
  • Clean behind the compactor blade with shovel and hoe when directed.
  • Spray and clean the hopper and truck at the end of each shift or as needed.
  • Report any safety or customer service related issues to driver and supervisor immediately.
  • Perform a variety of manual duties in the clean-up of scattered refuse; clean up the area around accidental waste spills and ensure customers' containers are replaced properly.
  • May be required to work during emergency situations.
  • Assist other routes as needed to complete daily work.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
