About The Position

This individual contributor position is responsible for assisting Production Supervisors with the coordination of the use of equipment, material, and human resources to gain maximum productivity from their assigned crew. The Galvanizing Crew Leader will establish themselves as a model employee displaying a high degree of personal efficiency in achieving employee, department, and company goals. The incumbent will assist in the training of new employees and assist in facilitating shift start up meetings and safety meetings. The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring safe work habits by all department employees, all finished products meet Valmont and customer quality standards, and department housekeeping is maintained for a safe working environment. The Galvanizing Crew Leader is responsible for accurate piece counts, part identification, move tags, dip sheet tallies, labor tracking, and accurate inventory and stocking of the tool crib. Additionally, the incumbent will monitor process material flow, the production schedule and kettle maintenance tasks. Additional duties include assisting in all 5S standards and working safely with the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Requirements

  • Minimum of two years of experience working in a galvanizing facility.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with team members and interact with individuals from other departments.
  • Thorough understanding of the galvanizing process and relevant quality standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret various documents, including material drawings, safety rules, operating manuals, and procedure manuals.
  • Must be willing to become a Valmont certified bridge crane operator.
  • Must successfully complete American Galvanizer’s Association Inspection Course within first 30 days of employment.
  • Thorough knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong commitment to safety practices, with a high level of awareness and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Proven problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify issues, implement effective solutions, and plan for future production needs.
  • The ability to work overtime as needed.
  • Must possess a passion for excellence and integrity, exhibiting the drive and determination to deliver exceptional results and contribute to the success of meeting department goals.
  • Must be able to read and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Requires the reading, writing, addition and subtraction of whole numbers.
  • Must completely understand the level of quality expected for the finished product, as established by the quality program and the ASTM123 Standard.
  • Must possess adequate communication and interpersonal skills to successfully train and direct a team.
  • Must display an aptitude for problem solving and the ability to plan for potential problems or needs.
  • Must provide the appropriate and accurate information on department forms, including move tags, reject tags, and shift summary reports.
  • Must be knowledgeable and able to use IFS, QAD, VIP, Intelex, and Valmont Coatings Connector (VCC) Max.

Nice To Haves

  • Forklift Operator Certification
  • Bilingual fluency (English & Spanish)
  • Six to twelve months experience training as a Bridge Crane Operator
  • Three to four months experience training and operating a forklift

  • Responsible for accurate piece counts, part identification, move tags, dip sheet tallies, labor tracking, and accurate inventory and stocking of the tool crib.
  • Monitor process material flow, the production schedule and kettle maintenance tasks.
  • Assist in all 5S standards and working safely with the required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Train new employees and provide ongoing training to current employees on the proper procedures and quality system work instructions required to prepare material for the galvanizing process.
  • Execute the production schedule and manage the inventory by calling in materials requiring galvanization.
  • Monitor material flow to identify and address potential process slowdowns, ensuring continuous production.
  • Monitor material recipes through process tanks and zinc bath.
  • Complete move tags, reject tags, and daily shift summary reports including labor and quantity tracking.
  • Oversee and ensure the completion of daily kettle maintenance tasks to maintain operational efficiency.
  • Inspect clean, finished material to ensure it meets the quality standards, is packaged and banded correctly, and sign off on the product tags.
  • Work closely with Production Supervisor and other crew leaders to resolve delays or quality issues, providing necessary support and assistance.
  • Collaborate with crane operators to troubleshoot and resolve any production issues that may arise during operations.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, adhering to safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment for all employees.
  • Assist with root cause analysis for safety and quality incidents.
  • Regularly use a computer for email communication, typing, and Excel; maintain strong proficiency and check emails daily to ensure timely responses.
  • Provide leadership and clear work direction to assigned teams.
  • Follow the schedule, adhere to instructions, and effectively communicate expectations to the team.
  • Operate overhead bridge crane when necessary to ensure smooth workflow and minimal downtime.
  • Assist Material Handlers and Bridge Crane Operators when necessary, and adhering to all safety protocols and operational procedures.
  • Assist Production Manager with supervisory responsibilities in Production Supervisor’s absence.
  • Perform all of the job duties of a Material Handler and a Bridge Crane Operator.
  • Spend 75% of their time leading the team on the cold end, hot end and/or the process deck.
  • Accurately complete move tags and reject tags, follow the production schedule, fill out shift summary reports, inspect galvanized material, and train employees.
  • Spend 25% of time operating overhead bridge cranes, standing, kneeling, bending, and lifting while processing parts that average between 25-30 pounds.
  • Plan for the movement of materials in and out of the building for efficient line flow and communicate this movement with the appropriate material handling procedures to allow for maximum safety, efficiency, and quality.
  • Monitor piece counts and not allow parts to leave the building with proper move tags and quality inspections.
  • Continual inspection of the process tanks for lost parts.
