About The Position

Under the guidance of the Manager, Gallery Teaching, the Lead-Gallery Teacher will lead Pre-K-12 school group experience with art using learner-centered methods. The Lead-Gallery Teacher will help develop and evaluate the programs they deliver. The Lead-Gallery Teacher will assist with field trip scheduling, training, tour development, and other museum-related education projects. This position will need to be available to work in the museum and off-site.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field. Four (4) years of experience working with youth in a school or formal education program. Supervisory experience strongly preferred. Additional years of experience may be substituted for degree requirement.
  • Demonstrated collaboration skills to work across departments and divisions internally and with diverse stakeholders externally.
  • Demonstrated ability to speak publicly, including presenting or sharing information in a clear, effective, and engaging manner suited to the audience.
  • Ability to provide information, ideas, and instructions clearly, effectively, and professionally through talking or writing to diverse individuals of all ages.
  • Demonstrated research and analysis skills to identify critical information and complete projects and goals.
  • Demonstrated skills to prioritize and complete multiple tasks to meet deadlines and goals.
  • Demonstrated experience working with students of all ages and abilities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of art, art history or cultural studies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of constructivist or learner-centered teaching practices.
  • Ability to work occasional weekend and evening hours for special events.
  • Must be proficient in the latest version of Microsoft Office 365.
  • Must have proficiency in the use of remote work technology such as scheduling with, connecting to, and using digital collaboration platforms such as Microsoft Teams.
  • Must be able to establish and maintain professional, productive and courteous interactions that promote positive teamwork. This encompasses going beyond giving and receiving instructions and includes but is not limited to (a) performing work activities requiring interacting or speaking with others; and (b) responding appropriately to constructive feedback or suggestions for improvement from a supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Manager of Gallery Teaching to support and supervise the gallery teaching team on tours and in other various locations.
  • Lead multiple interactive gallery experiences per day with groups of Pre-K students, where students explore, discover, and learn by engaging with works of art in the collection and each other.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in teaching all areas of the DIA collection through ongoing professional development.
  • Facilitate workshops and professional development opportunities for educators, teachers, and administrators, to demonstrate how the DIA can be a resource to support their classroom teaching.
  • Implement progressive teaching practices to meet Michigan curriculum standards.
  • Collaborate with the Manager of Gallery Teaching to support field trip scheduling and evaluation to ensure that appropriate staffing levels are maintained, and according to business demands.
  • Engage youth of all ages using a variety of proven techniques.
  • Work with the gallery teaching team and supervisors to develop, evaluate and refine gallery learning experiences for groups of Pre-K-12 students.
  • Utilize professional coaching techniques to assist fellow gallery teachers in improving their practice; use coaching from others to continually improve one’s own practice.
  • Facilitate participation with colleagues in reflective practice, individually and as part of a team to improve teaching skills.
  • Communicate with Pre-K-12 teachers to coordinate some aspects of field trip implementation.
  • Apply DIA values to interactions to support a culture of belonging among internal and external stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
