About The Position

The GAL District Administrator directs, manages, and supervises the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) program in Judicial District 23 (Surry and Stokes counties). The GAL program provides advocacy services to abused and neglected children through the paired representation of citizen volunteer advocates and attorneys in the district.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of: child development and family dynamics to read juvenile petitions, review case assignments, and monitor case plan development; applicable laws, adjudicatory and dispositional phases of court hearings to monitor volunteer case assignments for program evaluation; criminal procedures, rules of evidence, and basic investigative approaches to advise program supervisors and volunteers in case background investigations; and community resources and agencies to recruit and obtain program commitment.
  • Ability to: plan and implement the volunteer services program and to evaluate program results; recruit and supervise volunteers directly and through subordinate staff; plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinate employees to effectively manage program operations; review the assignment of cases by program supervisors to volunteers, and to monitor cases and evaluate performance; objectively and impartially analyze facts and opinions in evaluating juvenile petitions and make sound decisions; develop and maintain effective relationships with court and community officials, and the public to obtain and retain commitment and support for the GAL program; communicate and consult effectively with others involved in the advocacy process; and express oneself clearly and concisely in oral and written form.
  • Bachelor's degree in business management, business administration or public administration or a related field plus five (5) years of experience with managing a large diverse group of staff, two (2) years in direct management of staff is required.

Responsibilities

  • Solicit support from key officials in community groups, local agencies, the court, and other county partners serving families and children to encourage citizen volunteer participation.
  • Assure sufficient number of citizen volunteers are recruited, screened, trained and supervised to perform the required duties of a Guardian ad Litem in court proceedings.
  • Develop positive community relations to promote commitment to the program and also educate the public about the Guardian ad Litem program.
  • Supervise GAL staff in office and/or satellite office and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Initiate and participate on state, district, and county interdisciplinary task forces and committees to assist in the development of statewide Guardian ad Litem policies.
  • Responsible for required data collection and reporting.
  • Conduct interviews for new staff.
