This is a workforce development program. One day per week will be spent in a classroom, receiving training in soft skills, which will prepare candidates for careers. The remaining four days will be spent in the neighborhood beautification program. Work assignments may vary and include working outdoors in various climate and temperature extremes such as cold and high heat and humidity. The primary work assignment will be assisting with neighborhood beautification tasks throughout the City to make Philadelphia a cleaner place to live and work. These projects, though rewarding, require strenuous physical activity in difficult and challenging environments. An intern of the program will frequently be lifting and carrying 30 – 40 lbs. Additional optional assignments could include the use of a jackhammer, which can weigh up to 90 lbs. Employees will have the opportunity to be hired in a full-time civil service capacity at the completion of the workforce development program.
