Amazon Industrial Robotics is seeking a talented, enthusiastic, and motivated Hardware Functional Safety Engineer to define and design safety-relevant controls for robotics systems and industrial equipment. This candidate should be motivated to adapt well-tried design and safety principles and industrial safety standards into a new and emerging industry. The preferred candidate would have demonstrated experience developing embedded control systems, experience with machine safety and/or functional safety standards, and possess excellent communication skills. This position reports directly to the System Architect.

  • Guiding the design of controls for robotics and industrial automation equipment for use in a functionally safe product.
  • Performing hazard and risk assessments, and safety analyses of robotics and industrial automation equipment
  • Writing or reviewing safety requirement specifications, safety management plans, safety concepts, and verification and validation plans.
  • Applying IEC industrial standards for the development lifecycle of a robotic control system, and coaching developers on processes to apply during this phase.
  • Collaboratively participating in interdisciplinary teams to execute product designs from concept to production including design, prototype, test, validation, and certification.
  • Writing or reviewing functional specifications, design verification plans and test procedures
  • Analyzing failure modes of control circuits, the effect of the failure, and identifying mitigations and diagnostics
  • Driving projects to closure; ensuring that systems can be manufactured, deployed, maintained, and meet regulatory requirements for certification
  • Ensuring control systems comply to machinery safety standards (ISO 13849, IEC 62061, IEC 61508, IEC 61496)
  • BS degree in electrical engineering or equivalent
  • 4+ years of experience with complex electromechanical systems
  • Experience with safety programs from concept through certification/regulatory process
  • Demonstrated strong ability to move seamlessly between levels of abstraction – from system to the “nuts and bolts” implementation.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a regulated industry (Functional Safety, Military, Medical, Automotive, Robotics) applying standards to design and work products.
  • Experience programmatically testing products, measuring test coverage, developing the best automation, driving testability and diagnostic
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, team environment
  • Experience understanding needs of business and end customers and translating them into right solutions
  • Experience identifying and resolving complex issues
  • Experience with electronics systems including microcontrollers, FPGAs, and/or mixed-signal designs
  • Desire to commit and follow through on complex, multi-year programs
