About The Position

The Functional Safety Engineer role at Cummins focuses on ensuring compliance with ISO 26262 standards for electronic and electrical systems in automotive and off-highway products. This position involves integrating functional safety protocols, translating product requirements into technical specifications, and executing validation tests. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance the safety, reliability, and performance of Cummins' products.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a related STEM field is required; a Master's degree may be preferred for specific roles.
  • 3-5 years in automotive functional safety implementations, preferably with automotive OEMs or Tier 1 suppliers.
  • Proficiency in automotive and off-highway domain functional safety concepts and communication protocols (e.g., UDS/CAN, J1939, LIN, Ethernet).
  • Expertise in embedded systems programming (C/C++, Python) with a focus on Functional Safety.
  • Experience in functional safety implementation testing.
  • Understanding of the interaction between vehicle systems from a functional safety perspective.
  • Knowledge of industry trends and technology roadmaps for automotive Functional Safety.
  • Familiarity with ISO 26262 design methodologies, hazard analysis, and electronic control module implementations.

Nice To Haves

  • Basic knowledge of cloud services within vehicle control modules.
  • Awareness of ISO 21434, AIS 189/190, and related cybersecurity standards.
  • Familiarity with "V" model and sprint work methodologies.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the implementation of ISO 26262 and off-highway functional safety standards across automotive and off-highway sector projects.
  • Develop and maintain safety plans, safety cases, and safety analyses in compliance with ISO 26262.
  • Work with hardware and software engineers to incorporate functional safety requirements into system architectures.
  • Conduct safety assessments and audits to ensure compliance with functional safety standards.
  • Offer technical guidance on functional safety-related challenges to project teams.
  • Develop safety concepts and requirements for new automotive technologies.
  • Remain up-to-date with functional safety advancements and automotive industry standards.
  • Evaluate existing architectures and functional safety implementations.
  • Suggest and implement remediation architectures and Proof of Concepts for field issues.
