About The Position

Functional Academic Teacher – Online Campus (Grades 6–12: Math & Science) Although this is a remote position, candidates must reside in Arizona and be able to come onsite to our Phoenix Online Campus Office two times per month for meetings and professional development. The Functional Academic Teacher will serve students in grades 6–12 with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) in a fully online learning environment. This position focuses on providing specially designed instruction in Functional Math and Science to students who require modified academic instruction and support in developing foundational academic and functional life skills. The teacher will manage an IEP caseload of up to 15 students and provide individualized instruction aligned with each student’s academic, functional, and transition goals. Students served may demonstrate significant learning needs and may require accommodations such as visual supports, structured instruction, and assistive technology, including Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). The Functional Academic Teacher will support students in developing practical math and science skills that promote independence, problem-solving, and real-world application while using the Common Core State Connectors.

Requirements

  • Must be an Arizona Resident
  • Arizona IVP Fingerprint clearance card
  • Valid Special Education Teaching Certification
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher

Nice To Haves

  • Experience managing and teaching a caseload of students with disabilities in a classroom learning environment
  • At least 3 years of experience working with students with moderate to severe disabilities
  • Experience and training in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide engaging, standards-aligned instruction in Functional Math and Science tailored to each student’s IEP goals and present levels of performance.
  • Plan weekly lessons using AZACS-approved curriculum resources, incorporating accommodations, modifications, and differentiated instruction.
  • Adapt instructional materials to meet diverse learning, communication, and processing needs.
  • Implement structured teaching strategies and evidence-based practices to support comprehension, engagement, and independence in an online environment.
  • Integrate real-world applications of math and science concepts such as budgeting, measurement, data analysis, health and environmental science, and problem-solving.
  • Utilize digital platforms and assistive technologies to support access to instruction and student participation.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with parents/guardians to update them on progress, goals, and strategies.
  • Support AAC users by embedding communication opportunities in all instructional activities.
  • Celebrate student achievements and progress, fostering a positive, supportive learning environment.
  • Ensure regular engagement of students in the online classroom, monitoring attendance and participation.
  • Develop, review, and implement Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Collect, analyze, and report student performance data monthly to inform instructional decisions.
  • Meet with students to complete transition-related activities to create a transition plan for their IEP meeting.
  • Attend and actively participate in all IEP meetings, multidisciplinary team meetings, and professional learning sessions.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of student progress, services, and instructional Supports.
  • Collaborate with administration, related service providers, the student support team, and the Functional Academic staff to support student needs.
  • Provide clear communication and constructive feedback to support staff assigned to your students.
  • Participate in professional development to maintain current knowledge of special education best practices and online teaching strategies.
