About The Position

A St. Mark’s Lower School Substitute Teacher is responsible for providing fill-in support to the instructional and grade level programs under the direction of the Head of Lower School. As a core member of the team, Substitute Teachers are flexible, collaborative, and child-centered professionals.

Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education or related field
Experience in working with all ages of students in an independent school environment
Flexibility to move between classrooms and grade levels throughout a single day or week
The ability to have constructive working relationships with a variety of teachers with different teaching styles
A passion for teaching and learning with a collaborative spirit
Genuine affinity for working with children and families in a highly engaged community
Willing to seek certification for substituting in early childhood classrooms when needed

Responsibilities

Receive daily or weekly assignment from the Head of Lower School
Seamlessly step into classrooms where the Lead or Assistant Teacher is absent or additional oversight is needed
Guide and supervise the classroom under the direction of the lead teacher or Division Head
Reinforce lessons presented by teachers by working one-on-one with students or in small groups
Assist in creating an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays and activity/learning centers
Maintain technology skills in keeping with the vision of the school
Supervise play areas, classrooms, bathrooms, recess, lunch and arrival and dismissal as assigned
Help teachers prepare for lessons by getting materials ready or setting up equipment
Maintain professional competence by attending staff meetings and development programs, curriculum development meetings, in-service and other professional activities
Chaperone class trips
Escort students to ancillary classes
Assume other responsibilities as assigned by the Head of Lower School
