About The Position

The position involves assisting in the feeding and maintenance of horses and the upkeep of the property at Skidmore College. The role requires performing various essential duties related to horse care, stable maintenance, and general groundskeeping, ensuring a safe and clean environment for both horses and staff.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • One year of previous related work experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to speak and listen effectively with supervisors, customers, and employees.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written or oral form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to utilize or learn basic computer functions.
  • Valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Feed horses the prescribed grain and hay according to a written schedule.
  • Daily cleaning of automatic water bowls.
  • Maintain stalls with daily cleaning, manure removal, and replacement of bedding.
  • Organize storage areas and repair stall floors when needed.
  • Feed and water horses as required by staff.
  • Clean the arena, including dragging, sweeping walls, cleaning mirrors, and moving jumps.
  • Clean the stable area, including floors, office, restrooms, and aisles.
  • Drive tractor and use attachments as necessary for tasks.
  • Make emergency repairs to stalls or fences due to damage by horses.
  • Remove snow and ice from doorways to ensure proper opening and closing of doors.
  • Utilize ice melt as necessary.
  • Perform general groundskeeper duties as assigned.
  • Aid in the turnout or handling of horses as directed by the supervisor.
  • Maintain knowledge of horse behavior and ailments, reporting any suspicious behavior to the Director or Barn Manager.
  • Maintain an interest in learning new ideas and incorporate new procedures when required.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with supervisors, customers, and employees.
  • Maintain an appropriate image and dress, establishing a high level of customer service.
