About The Position

The Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences Department (NRES) Department in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Sciences at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA, is seeking a two-year, academic year, Full Time Lecturer in Environmental Planning starting August 17, 2026. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Primary teaching responsibilities will include Environmental Impact Analysis and Management, Applied Resource Analysis and Assessment, and Natural Resource Protection and Policy. Additional courses across the curriculum may be assigned based on student demand and the applicants’ qualifications and interests. Initial rank and salary for lecturer faculty are based on professional experience and educational background and are determined by the hiring department. Most new lecturers are hired at the Lecturer A or B rank. The NRES Department offers B.S. degrees in Environmental Earth and Soil Sciences, Environmental Management and Protection, and Forestry and Natural Resources, and an M.S. in Environmental Science and Management. The programs enroll approximately 750 undergraduate students and 30 graduate students and are supported by 20 tenured or tenure track faculty. The department has access to a variety of on campus and off campus field and lab resources to support hands on instruction and research, including multiple ranches and agricultural fields on campus as well as Cal Poly’s 3,000-acre Swanton Pacific Ranch in Santa Cruz county. The department also supports strong interdisciplinary collaboration across campus including faculty participation in Cal Poly’s Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fire institute and the new Center for Organic Production and Research, among other programs.

Requirements

• An earned Bachelor's degree in environmental planning or closely related field.
• Evidence of progressive professional experience in the environmental planning field.
• The ability to be a productive team player and to interact well with peers, students, industry, government agencies, and the public.
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering inclusive, equitable, and supportive learning environments.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, and strong interest in undergraduate and graduate teaching.
• Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language is required.

Nice To Haves

• Master’s degree in environmental planning or closely related field.
• The ability to collaborate with the faculty across the College and University is desirable.
• Preference will be given to candidates with teaching experience and the ability to teach broadly across the curriculum.
• Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience who bring professional capabilities and those with the ability to build connections with industry and foster new industry relationships.
