About The Position

The Full-Time Faculty/Tenure Track Instructor in Nursing at Santa Monica College is responsible for delivering high-quality education in mental health and medical surgical nursing. This role involves both clinical and didactic teaching, curriculum development, and participation in program evaluation. The instructor will engage in professional development and contribute to a supportive learning environment while adhering to regulatory standards and promoting equity and diversity within the academic community.

Requirements

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in Nursing OR Bachelor's in nursing AND Master's in health education or health science OR equivalent qualifications as set by the Board of Registered Nursing.
  • Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of socio-economic, academic, cultural, and ethnic diversity within the community college student population.
  • Ability to utilize mid and high-fidelity simulators as a teaching methodology.
  • Strong computer skills and knowledge of academic technology solutions.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a registered nurse within the last five years, with at least two years providing direct patient care in mental health-medical surgical.
  • Completion of a course in teaching techniques/methods offered at an accredited institution.
  • Full-time teaching experience in nursing education.
  • Knowledge of test construction and evaluation measures.
  • Experience within a community college environment.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate expertise in mental health and medical surgical nursing content, both clinical and didactic.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching/learning using evidence-based standards and innovative teaching strategies.
  • Participate in curriculum design, implementation, and evaluation; develop program policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to systematic program evaluation reports and self-studies.
  • Collaborate with peers to create and sustain a supportive learning environment for students and faculty.
  • Engage in continual professional development and scholarly activities to maintain excellence in nursing education.
  • Adhere to California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) regulations and be approved to teach mental health/medical surgical nursing.
  • Maintain office hours and be available for day, evening, and weekend classes as needed.
  • Engage in participatory governance processes and serve on college committees as assigned.
