About The Position

The Fulltime Faculty within the Nursing Program is directly responsible for delivering the curriculum while reflecting the Nursing program’s philosophy, theoretical constructs, course descriptions, program learning outcomes, and student learning outcomes in conjunction with the nursing program director. Additionally, faculty will ensure the curriculum adheres to the accreditation standards and NCBON rules and regulations. The focus of the faculty role is on teaching with additional responsibilities in scholarship and service to be a contributing member to the University.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and currently licensed as a registered nurse in the state of North Carolina.
  • MSN required, Doctoral degree preferred, with achievement of NC Nursing Education hours, per Rule NCAC 36 .0318 FACULTY, (or plan to obtain hours within next 3 years).
  • Applicants with an MSN only will be considered for the rank of Instructor and must agree to starting doctoral studies within one year of hire.
  • Experience of at least two years in the practice of nursing as a registered nurse within the last ten years.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and analytical skills.
  • Functional abilities to carry out clinical and laboratory teaching responsibilities.
  • Competence in clinical skills in areas of teaching.
  • Competent in personal computer applications; word processing, spreadsheet, database, and email.
  • Successful completion of criminal background check and drug screening, current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Provide evidence of yearly tuberculin skin tests, and other required immunizations as per nursing program policy.
  • Lift, push, pull, carry 50 lbs.
  • Be able to withstand 10-hr clinical shifts in inpatient and outpatient facilities.

  • Previous nursing teaching experience preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in interviewing and makes recommendations for hiring of faculty and adjunct faculty.
  • Arranges for coverage of classes during own absences and emergency leaves.
  • Promotes rapport within the department, campus, and community.
  • Posts and keeps a minimum of nine-ten office hours per week that are convenient to students who seek assistance with counseling, academic advising, and coursework.
  • Maintains punctuality in meeting assigned classes and clinical.
  • Functions as a Lead Faculty for assigned courses.
  • Plans, monitors, and evaluates the instruction provided by Adjunct Faculty assisting with any aspect of the course.
  • Models professional behavior and standards of practice while in the workplace.
  • Makes recommendations regarding equipment, software purchases, and equipment maintenance contracts.
  • Participates in the budget planning process.
  • Attends and participates in department meetings.
  • Participates in accreditation reviews and reports.
  • Participates in developing programs, evaluating and revising student policies, organizational framework and revising curricular offerings.
  • Participates in publicizing and disseminating information about the program.
  • Participates in recruitment, orientation, and coordination of Adjunct Faculty.
  • Participates in the orientation and advisement of students.
  • Serves as a member of the BSN Faculty and Curriculum Committee.
  • Serves as a member of the Nursing Advisory Committee.
  • Participate in university-wide committees as assigned.
  • Participate in annual admissions meetings.
  • Serves as an advisor for sophomore pre-nursing students and enrolled nursing students.
  • Assists students with course scheduling and provides guidance in their academic and personal development.
  • Develops remediation plans with students as needed.
  • Schedules regular meetings with students who are at risk to be unsuccessful in a course or the nursing program.
  • Assists students in identifying and utilizing resources that may contribute to their success.
  • Implements syllabi, including all course requirements and assignments, for all students.
  • Submits suggestions for changes in master syllabi to the Nursing Program Director.
  • Designs and implements new curriculum.
  • Participates in the evaluation of curriculum.
  • Maintains control of the classroom.
  • Develops assigned course and clinical syllabi to reflect the Nursing program’s philosophy, theoretical constructs, course descriptions, program learning outcomes, and student learning outcomes in conjunction with the nursing program chair.
  • Utilizes a variety of teaching methods to accommodate the learning styles of the students.
  • Designs laboratory instruction and/or simulations, with the assistance of the simulation laboratory director.
  • Implements laboratory and/or simulation instruction on a weekly basis, depending on course.
  • Assists with laboratory/simulation setup and tear-down.
  • Provides opportunities for active student involvement through practice and application.
  • Demonstrates a command of the subject matter.
  • Demonstrates considerations for diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Begins and ends class on time.
  • Addresses students by name.
  • Encourages student participation and questions.
  • Models and encourages a collaborative faculty-student relationship.
  • Provides or utilizes course materials (handouts, interactive notes, technology) that enhance student learning and follows the course syllabus.
  • Maintains eye contact with the class.
  • Responds appropriately to student cues of confusion or boredom.
  • Models professional behavior and standards of practice.
  • Performs additional responsibilities for nursing faculty performing clinical supervision in an affiliating agency including: Participates in clinical orientation as required by the institution. Completes validations as required by contract with clinical agencies Orients students to clinical facilities. Makes clinical assignments for students at the clinical setting if needed as determined by course. Supervises students in patient care areas in collaboration with staff. Conducts pre and post conferences with students. Schedules make-up clinical as needed. Maintains ongoing weekly evaluation of individual student progress in the clinical area. Provides timely ongoing verbal and written feedback to students. Guides and counsels with students toward personal development in dealing with clinical stress. Keeps the Nursing Program Director informed on issues that arise with students and clinical sites.
  • Provides the evaluation of students in both didactic and clinical courses.
  • Participates in peer evaluations when requested.
  • Participates in the evaluation of the Nursing Program Director when requested.
  • Participates in the evaluation of Staff members when requested.
  • Reviews student evaluation summaries of assigned courses and utilizes the feedback for planning and implementing future courses.
  • Participates in program planning in response to student program evaluation feedback.
  • Participates in program planning in response to clinical evaluation feedback.
  • Participates in program planning in response to employer satisfaction surveys.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
